First backpacking/hiking trip

Looking for some advice/moral support on my first backpacking/hiking trip. My husband and I will be going to Zion. He is an experienced backpacker but I’ve only slept in a tent once (last week to practice). I am concerned about shitting in the woods/the mechanics of it. Like do you just pull down your pants? Take one leg out?? Both legs out??? We will have to carry our waste out so like do I bother digging a hole? I did buy a little adapter for my water bottle to turn it into a bidet bc I’m used to using one at home. I know there is a small risk of cross contamination but I might bring a smal ..read more

Best places for camping near nyc?

me and some of my friends are looking to go camping. we’re from nyc but willing to go pretty much anywhere on the east coast we can get without a car. the main issue we’re running into is worries abt permits since some of us are minors, and camping without a car. bc of the permit thing the top priority is state forests, but i’m not sure how strict the park rangers are in the parks and if it’s really necessary. most of us are beginners so not sure if dispersed is the best option (willing to try tho) but we’re looking for free or dirt cheap camping. we’re thinking around 5-7 days. what’s the be ..read more

Female solo camping with dogs

I’m thinking about taking my two medium-sized dogs on a solo camping trip this summer. I’m going through a divorce and I’m learning to do the things that I used to love doing with my husband, by myself and/or with my dogs. Does anyone have any tips or tricks? Particular considering I’m a female. And the dog aspect can be challenging when alone, too. I’ll also take any cautionary tales! I’m thinking about camping out of the back of my Subaru Outback for ease and security. (Also open to thoughts or suggestions there!) For background: I take them hiking all the time. They’ve been tent camping wi ..read more

April 5-7, had five spots in a row for our group of 20. Sites 55-59, tucked away in a sweet corner with huge rocks on two sides. There’s a sick roof route that I set up a top rope on, directly under site 57. Walked a couple sites over to climb a gnarly 100 foot multi pitch trad route called Tranquility. Been coming to J. Tree with the same group for the last five years and don’t plan to stop. submitted by /u/Horsecock_Johnson [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Rectangle vs true square tarp

I drove out to the mountains the other day to try out some setups so I can practice with them when it’s time for my next backpacking trip. I tried to achieve the setup pictured above, but it just wouldn’t come out right. I have an 8x10 foot tarp that has plenty of tie-off points. Was it user error, or do I need a true square to pull this setup off? submitted by /u/TheOldBitty [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Instant coffee recommendations??

I'm going backpacking in a few weeks. Typically when camping I take my grinder and grind some beans by hand. But I'm expecting to need to shed weight for this trip and I don't think all the parts will make the cut, so...what are some good instant coffees? If not good, then at least drinkable. I typically go for dark/medium roasts and always take it without cream/sugar. Thanks! submitted by /u/Darthkarth1955 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Camping out NASCAR style! Will be camping out at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Rain will be a reoccurring issue, so I’m hoping I stay dry!
