“My most prized piece of gear right now is my bug shelter!” By Camper Christina. Being someone who camps year round, the most important thing to have is the right gear.  If you are out enjoying nature, but are missing an item that can make or break your trip, it can make all the difference in the world. One of my favorite pieces of gear is my Eureka VCS-13, Backpackers Mesh Room.  This model is a bit older and only slightly different from the very popular No Bug Zone, and something I would never camp without during bug season.  The current model of this version is the VCS-16 wei ..read more

Backcountry Camping Recipe By Camper Christina Sometimes it’s hard to figure out what to make when you head out on a camping trip. I often have issues keeping my food cold during hot summer days in the backcountry. This is a meal that is easy and tasty, and can be made with fresh ingredients or dehydrated ones to accommodate the type of camping trip you would use it on. You can also substitute many of the items to ones you may prefer without drastically changing the meal. Here is how I make Prosciutto Basil Tomato Pasta and it is absolutely delicious. Ingredients: Serving size: 1 person 2-4 n ..read more

By: Dorathy Gass For years now, my husband and I went back and forth on buying an RV. A family that loves the great outdoors, we were looking for a “home away from home” that would allow us and our two girls a little getaway to turn to in the late spring, summer, and early fall, where we could make some long-lasting memories by enjoying campfires, the lake, and the fresh outdoor air. In the spring of 2019, we decided to stop talking and do something about it; so, we seriously began researching RVs, and potential resort parks to place it in. We outlined a budget; we knew we wanted a bra ..read more

By Shelagh McNally. As we gradually come out of Covid-quarantine with vacation plans drastically changed, camping remains one of the safest summer activities. Experts agree that the rate of infection is drastically reduced when the virus has to deal with wind or heat. Social distancing is still necessary though but while a crowded urban park may be&nbs ..read more

Hiking Chikanishing Trail, Killarney (Review)

Review by Nancy Yanaky (Napanee, ON): My husband and I were in the town Killarney on business and I talked him into doing the Chikanishing Trail before we left. Luckily the parks had opened for day use (and back country camping), so I purchased a day pass from the Visitor Centre. We saw the park signs warning that bears were in the area. I chose the Chikanishing trail because it offered rocky shoreline views of Georgian Bay, and with my husband not being much of a hiker, it was only a 3.5 km loop, taking between 2 and 2 .5 hours. I am a painter and wanted to scope out some good water lookout s ..read more

My Favourite: Backcountry camping at Tom Thomson Lake, Algonquin

By Ethan Brandt. I am not an experienced backpacker, canoeist, or hiker by any stretch or the imagination. I do, however, love to get outdoors, and I believe that I found quite the little gem of a campsite to spend a few days to get away – one that even the least experienced self-proclaimed outdoorsman can get to: Site 17 on Tom Thomson Lake. My girlfriend and I knew we had wanted to go on a trip through Algonquin park, an interior canoe trip, but weren’t sure where to start, where to go, or really what we were getting ourselves into. As I do with most of my planning, I looked at the map, fou ..read more

What you need to know about the recent Ontario fire ban?
Parks Blogger Ontario

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources announced a province-wide fire ban on Thursday, April the 2nd 2020. Although it was announced as provide-wide, the actual ban does not apply for the entire province. As of yesterday, there was some confusion around the announcement, particularly around who should be and should not be concerned about the ban. 1) Which areas does the fire ban actually apply to? The ban announced by the province applies only for areas from Muskoka to Northern Ontario. Southern Ontario is exempted from the fire ban. However, there are municipalities who are announcing their o ..read more

Trip Duration: 3 Days Trip Season: Fall Trip type: Solo backpacking & backcountry camping. Trip Location: Western Uplands Backpacking Trail, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. Solo Camping for Piece of Mind By Nick Vardon. I camp often, I’d say I have spent more nights in a tent or under the stars then I have in a hotel. Solo camping however is something I haven’t taken on in almost 20 years. ‘“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul”. – John Muir I had this trip planned for just over a month, I knew I needed to get into the wilderness to re connect and re charge ..read more
