After long consideration, I have decided to retire Nobody Hikes in L.A. after Labor Day. I want to thank everyone who has read this blog for their support and encouragement. Knowing that it has inspired many folks to get out and explore trails is rewarding. As some of you reading this may know, I have not lived in the Los Angeles area for several years. In early 2019, my wife and I moved to my native Massachusetts for family reasons. Since NHLA was such an important part of my life, I kept it going, publishing occasional guest posts, interviews and product reviews and continuing to share what ..read more

How hiking helped my mental health: Guest post by Arie Abtahi

In 2017, I worked at a corporate office job where I spent my days in a cubicle. My mind was always clouded with deadlines, meetings, and emails that never seemed to stop. I struggled to find time for personal hobbies and realized there had to be more to life than the repetitive office life cycle.  I glanced at my coworkers, noticing the fake smiles on their faces and the emptiness in their eyes, which mirrored what I felt. The pressure to meet expectations, the unending stream of meetings and reports, and the absence of purpose in my work weigh heavily on me, making it hard to enjoy life ..read more

Hiking is an outdoor activity that most of us have thought about taking up at least once. Do we have the necessary wear, or more precisely, footwear for the occasion? On one side, we have hiking enthusiasts who gladly put their heart and soul into finding and buying the right equipment. Still, we should not fail to acknowledge those that want to combine useful with comfort. Let’s say that you’re a construction worker, and you’re wondering if there is another purpose your work boots can fill. Maybe a more precise question would be: Can you wear your work boots for hiking? Is this acceptable, or ..read more

Review: Athletic convertible gym backpack from Elite Sports
Nobody Hikes in LA
by dlockeretz

The Athletic Convertible Gym Backpack is designed to function both as a day backpack and as a medium sized gym bag. Available for purchase directly from Elite Sports, it may lack some features that hikers have come to expect, but it is still durable, versatile, lightweight and reasonably priced. Having taken it on several day hikes, I found myself missing the chest strap and belt straps often found on hiking-specific packs. However, for short to moderate day hikes that don’t require much gear, that’s not an essential feature and I imagine that as I get more used to not having it with this pack ..read more

Interview with Black Girls Trekkin’

Was there a specific catalyst that inspired the creation of Black Girls Trekkin’ or more of a general sense that it would fill a need that was going unmet?  Black Girls Trekkin’ started when I (co-founder Tiffany) was completing the 52 hike challenge on my own. I hiked alone a lot during that year and didn’t see many people of color on the trails the further out I went from Los Angeles. I initially started it as an Instagram page and then built a community from that after multiple people were DMing us saying they wanted us to host a group hike.  How did you first get interested in hi ..read more
