Staff at East Kent hospitals had the chance to experience what a diabetic hypo is like, as part of events planned by the children’s diabetes team for World Diabetes Day in November.
Novo Nordisk and the Paul Carr Diabetes Centre loaned virtual reality headsets that showed colleagues what it would be like to experience a hypoglycaemic episode while driving a car, or while moving through the kitchen at home.
The team also handed out laminated posters to raise awareness of the signs of Type 1 diabetes, and gave out goodies such as pens, stickers and hand gel, donated by the Paula Carr Diabetes Tr ..read more

The annual 627 event to support children with their move from primary to secondary school was held by the East Kent Diabetes team on 27 July 2022.
The event was well attended and feedback was very positive.
The chilren took part in various events across the day – one of the first ‘ ice breaker ‘sessions was making monsters and creatures out of old newspapers!
The next session encouraged children to think about how their school day will change when they move to secondary school and how that might affect them. Participants were asked to find out information about their new school prior to ..read more

On a beautiful sunny Saturday in July, around 300 people joined staff from East Kent Hospitals Children’s Diabetes Team on a visit to Howletts animal park.
The Paula Carr Diabetes Trust funded approximately 200 tickets and an additional 100 tickets were purchased by families wanting to bring other family members.
The day out appealed to a wide age-range of children and young people, from those who were very small, to those about to move to adult services.
Everyone who wanted to was invited to meet up at a central point at lunch-time to eat, chat and get to know one another. Lots of famil ..read more

Over the past few years, the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust has helped children’s diabetes teams across Kent to prepare Year 6 children living with type 1 diabetes for their move to secondary school. This year’s 627 was held on the 8th June at the Parkwood community centre. With 18 children attending, this was the busiest one yet.
This year’s group of children will be going to 12 different secondary schools, so children were encouraged to work together and get to know others who would be at the same school.
Various activities and talks took place – the psychology ..read more

The Paula Carr Diabetes Trust would like to congratulate Reggie Murray, a young 12-year-old living with Type 1 diabetes. He recently represented Ramsgate under 13 football team in the final of the East Kent Youth Cup.
Although his team lost 1-0, he represented his team very well and was awarded ‘man of the match’.
The Paula Carr Diabetes Trust is very proud of the way Reggie embraces his condition and continues to live life to the full without being defined by it.
He is a real role model for all children living with Type 1 diabetes.

Over 100 accompanied children with Type 1 diabetes joined a fun-filled trip to the panto at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury at the end of November. The outing was funded by the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust and included some of the team from the East Kent University Hospitals NHS Trust Children’s Diabetes Service.
Every child received a Christmas chocolate selection box when they arrived – so there was lots of carb counting at the interval! One parent commented that it was lovely for her child to see other children using the same diabetes equipment as her son and busy doing the same tests ..read more
