The ‘627’ Event is quality assured one day programme delivered by diabetes teams within Kent and Medway for pupils moving from school year 6 to year 7 in September.  The one day event forms part of the children’s diabetes team pathway in preparing for their move to secondary school. Thirteen Year 6 pupils from East Kent attended on Thursday 27th June 2024 at Thannington Resource Centre in Canterbury. The day started with a fun ice-breaker, making newspaper animals. The Children’s Diabetes Team in East Kent took 52 children / young people with type 1 diabetes and their families to Howlett’s zoo , Canterbury for a fun packed day out. The team were also joined by Eibhlin Jones from Diabetes UK (Together type 1 programme) and two Diabetes UK young leaders Rebecca and Gerry who did an amazing job on their first outing! The young leaders circulated at picnic time, providing support for the families, children and young people in attendance. The children’s teams from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust held their annual 627 transition days earlier this month .The transition days help the children with Type 1 diabetes to gain independence on managing their condition moving from primary to secondary school. Fun days were had combining a mix of learning and play – the children love break time and getting to know each other – any initial nerves soon went away ! Friends Sara Hopper and Sara Ansell have been supporting the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust with their annual sponsored walk around Saltwood, Hythe. Last years event celebrated the 10th sponsored walk that the ladies have organized for the charity. The ladies, who have children with diabetes, called upon friends and family to join them on a gloriously sunny day in October.
