Endurance Produced by Suffering: The Black Church in America
Logos Bible Software
by Malcolm Foley

American Christianity is, in many ways, a cultural and denominational hodgepodge. Colonization led to certain emphases among American Presbyterians, Anglicans, and Baptists. And as Pentecostalism, Methodism, and others were added to the American landscape, the range of religious possibilities increased all the more. Parallel to the history of these theological traditions, however, is a history of race. In order to understand the phenomenon that we often refer to as the Black or the African-American church, it is important to understand the role of race in American society. Exegetical Crises of Faith: 12 Tips for Struggling Students & Professors
Logos Bible Software
by JoAnna Hoyt
5d ago
Every year new students walk into classrooms ready to build upon their first-year biblical language skills by learning how to exegete the Hebrew or Greek text. They are taught how to examine the nuances of words, the rules of grammar. They discover the complexities of manuscript variation, genre, historical context, and the proper use of resources. They are then taught to pull all that data together into an interpretation, usually culminating in a lengthy exegetical research paper that showcases their newly acquired skills. But for many students, learning the exegesis process is more than lea ..read more

The New Ecumenism: A Short History of Modern Ecumenical Movements
Logos Bible Software
by Tim Perry

Another Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has passed, and a recent picture of current Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, blessing Pope Francis has, at least in some quarters, generated controversy. Recent convert to Catholicism and former Anglican priest (and Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II), Gavin Ashenden, for example, provocatively called the depiction, “the triumph of cosmetic presentation over reality—to be more topical, a sort of ecclesiastical drag show.”1 His point, as the title of his article clarifies, is that such actions are entirely about performance, with nothing at all of ..read more

Whether, When & How to Update a Creed or Confession
Logos Bible Software
by Stan Reeves
1w ago
Creeds and confessions are precious gifts to the church of the present from the church of the past, through the work of the Spirit.1 They summarize the beliefs Christians have studied, worked, debated—and even died—to state clearly from Scripture. Creeds2 are more general, usually shorter, and often more broadly accepted than confessions.3 But both types of statements teach us, challenge us, and give us guardrails for our own faith. Because creeds and confessions come to us from the past, their language eventually grows archaic to modern ears. At that point, we face the question of updating t ..read more

Hot Takes on Top Commentary Sets (Now on Sale) in Logos
Logos Bible Software
by Mark Ward
2w ago
The most important thing I have purchased for my Logos library—beyond what the major Logos packages already include—is commentary sets. I want careful, knowledgeable, reasoned opinions on interpretive questions. I want multiple opinions so that I can compare them through the Passage Guide. I do not find that this kind of “opinion polling” mires me in confusion or leaves me with nothing to say. I find that it is simply the better part of humility to listen to smart people—many of whom are gifts to Christ’s church (Eph 4:11–12). This year for March Matchups, we’ve pitted whole commentary sets h ..read more

12 Tips: How to Read the Bible Better
Logos Bible Software
by Michael F. Bird

The only thing taller than the Burj Khalifa is the stack of books I’m currently intending to read. I like to read. I like to read fiction, non-fiction, cookbooks, news stories, human interest pieces, jokes, and Twitter threads. I like to read the Bible, and I like to read books about the Bible. But I don’t read all these books the same way, for the same reasons, or with the same attention to detail. In reading a biography, I want a deep dive into someone’s life, find out what formed them, what made them tick, what drove them, what stopped them. I want to see how their life panned out. Sermon Planning: How to Get Ahead without Stressing Out
Logos Bible Software
by Jason Stone

For more than a decade now, I have trained pastors and students to leverage Logos for their study of the Bible, including sermon preparation and planning. Over the years, I have heard the same concern time and again: many professionals study the Bible using Logos but manage their sermon and lesson content in other applications. Whether it’s fear of the unknown or merely because their system simply works, I understand it can be daunting to try something new. The detailed Sermon Manager and the beautiful Radial Calendar may seem nice in theory—but the tried-and-true process of housing important ..read more

7 Women in the New Testament & Their Example to the Church
Logos Bible Software
by Cheyenne Lehto
2w ago
If I asked you to name a woman in the Bible, who would come to mind? How many could you name? Countless sermons have been preached about Esther and Ruth. We’ve scrutinized the woman at the well’s encounter with Jesus and celebrated Rahab’s strategic participation in the Israelites’ journey to the Promised Land. Throughout Scripture, women have faithfully proclaimed the gospel, offered their time and expertise, ministered to the marginalized, and actively contributed to the life and growth of their communities and the church. What richness can we gain by studying the influence of women like Ly ..read more

42 Best-Selling Books by & for Pentecostals
Logos Bible Software
by Ryan Lytton

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, and speaking as a Pentecostal, Pentecostals do not typically have a stellar academic reputation. One of my friends often jokingly introduces me by saying, “He’s a Pentecostal—but he went to Gordon-Conwell!” as if to beg people not to hold my theological inclinations against me. Indeed, the perception of Pentecostals is often reduced to phenomena such as speaking in tongues, not higher education. However, Pentecostals, especially in recent history, have done a lot of hard work to counter this stereotype. We have begun, in my opinion, the construction of our own car ..read more
