– No. 7 seed Lorenzo Musetti is the only singles seed in action in Doha. But he also has the most intriguing challenge as he faces Chinese star Zhang Zhizhen. And Roberto Bautista Agut, who is definitely struggling to win matches in 2024, takes on Hungarian muscleman Marton Fucsovics. Meanwhile, a rare total rainout on finals day as the matches at the Delray Beach Open were called in the afternoon, with a dire forecast for the rest of the day. Back at it at 10 a.m. Monday for the doubles, not before 12:30 p.m. for the singles. WTA Tour – Monday OOP (Doha is 8 hours ahead of ET, Rio is two ho ..read more

– Still no top-eight seeds in action, but new top-10 player Jelena Ostapenko is playing. And Elina Svitolina returns for the first time since the Australian Open. As well, Leylah Fernandez plays qualifier Bernarda Pera – and then take the court again for doubles later in the day. This is the third day in the last week that she’s had to play both singles and doubles. And despite the compacted nature of a one-week 1000, you’d think they could do a little better by her. At the WTA 125 in Puerto Vallarta, Carol Zhao needs just one win to make the main draw. ATP Tour – Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024 final ..read more

– Three finals, on three different surfaces, feature this Sunday on the ATP Tour. Buenos Aires is outdoors on clay, with a rare wild card champion. Delray Beach (an all-American affair, whose finals ended up getting rained out on Sunday) is outdoors on hard. And the ATP 500 in Rotterdam was the last significant indoor event on Tour until the fall. Sinner wins in Rotterdam, moving up to a career high No. 3 and becoming the first player since 2001 (Lleyton Hewitt) to win his maiden Grand Slam title – and follow it up with a title in his very next tournament. – Not too many seeds in action on the first day of the main draw in Dubai. But for many of them, it will be an interesting test. Notably Caroline Garcia and Beatriz Haddad Maia, who have already had their ups and downs this season. Look out for Mirra Andreeva vs feisty American Peyton Stearns (won by Stearns), and Americans Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin – Grand Slam champions, both, but unseeded and in uncertain form. Stephens prevailed in three; Kenin went down. All of the seeded players in action Sunday … went down. And the majority of the other matches were won by the lower-ranked player ..read more

– Another big week on the Canucks This Week beat, although Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov are taking a breather before Shapovalov heads to Dubai with his protected ranking, and Auger-Aliassime goes to Acapulco. The Canadian women continue in Mexico, with Rebecca Marino likely upgrading to the WTA 125 (although she’s in the qualifying, and remains alive at a $50K in Morelia, so that’s up in the air. Katherine Sebov, who retired in her qualifying match against Marino at the Australian Open with a wrist injury and hasn’t played since, is still entered in the WTA 125 in Puerto Vallarta ..read more

– Rotterdam organizers will be happy at the turn of events this week – not only to do they have the reigning Australian Open champion and the super-popular Grigor Dimitrov, they also have one Dutchman in the singles semis (Griekspoor) AND three in the doubles semifinals. In the end, an all-Dutch wild card doubles team is in Sunday’s final. In Buenos Aires, Carlos Alcaraz is still rolling. And in Delray, an all-American semifinal lineup. – As many seeds as went out early, it feels right that two of the top three seeds – No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 3 Elena Rybakina – are the last two standing in this Saturday final. Similar on the doubles side, where only No. 5 Schuurs and Stefani made a run and now are the heavy favorites in the final. While this final is happening, the final round of qualifying in Dubai will go on, as back-to-back WTA 1000s with 56 draws is a pretty tough little nugget in the 2024 schedule. – Down to the final four on a Friday. And draw luck has it that the only two seeds remaining – No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 3 Elena Rybakina – are on opposite sides of the draw. Otherwise, there might be a lot less suspense for the weekend. On the doubles side, the upsets flew just as they did in singles – the No. 5 seeds are the only seeded team still alive, and the other three are fairly unexpected. – Finally, on Thursday, awaited No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz makes his 2024 debut in Buenos Aires (along with No. 2 seed Cameron Norrie). A year ago, Alcaraz was injured in the offseason and missed the Australian swing completely, starting his season on the South American play. Needless to say, he has a few points to defend. In Rotterdam, there’s Sinner v Monfils and a few other tasty potential matchups. – The seeded players in Doha were 16 of the top 23 players in the world. But as the tournament has quickly wound down to the final eight, only two of those 16 seeds are still alive. Probably not too much of a surprise that they’re Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina. But Canadian Leylah Fernandez will try to take down the No. 3 seed Rybakina when they meet on Thursday for the first time in their careers.
