Have you ever thought about fostering? Are your emotions and worries holding you back? Have you ever asked, “How do you give them up? … Don’t you fall in love with your foster pet?” Gillian Barth in Indiana illustrates that course of emotions, and our comminity was there every step of the way. Gillian reached out to our Facebook support group “Foster Forum” in November, when she brought home Jolene from Natalie’s Second Chance Rescue. Have you noticed? Fostering has become increasingly popular over the last few years! [There’s a whole new podcast about it, folks!] Over the course of the Covid pandemic, unprecedented numbers of New Yorkers and Tennesseans joined our Foster Roster, offering to temporarily house homeless shelter pets during stay-at-home orders. With this growth in fostering comes the recognition that it is time to move away from the old shelter model, the traditional “pound” many people might have in mind. Moving towards the foster-centric model is the way of the future. You’ll want to listen to Episode 4 of o ..read more

“Pandemic Puppy”: Dog brought home during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. If anything, the COVID has shown us that people in quarantine and working from home want the company of pets. Foster Dogs Inc.’s rates of foster applicants to our Foster Roster database skyrocketed from 140 people per month in March 2019, to 3,000 people in March 2020; and for extra context, our February applicant numbers no different than those in 2019. On average our March and April numbers went up 17x our usual foster application rates. The New York Times reported in April 2020 about our statistics, and ABC News and T ..read more

Jones came into his family’s life during a tough time when they needed a loving companion. Somehow, right when they needed him, he made his long journey to make magic happen. Read Jones’ earlier blog article on our site here. Written by Ivy Schroer I was never one to say things were “meant to be” but it is hard not to use those words when recalling the story of our boy Jones. In early November we unexpectedly lost our pittie Pandora to cancer. It was a devastating blow losing my heart dog of 14 years. Meanwhile Jones, an adolescent pup, had already spent over a month at the Elba County S ..read more

Written by Foster Dogs, Inc.’s Executive Director, Sarah Brasky 2020 brought about difficult events and experiences for all of us, but there’s one thing that has stayed constant: our love for animals. The future of animal welfare is fostering. Foster Dogs, Inc. received thousands more applications to foster this year than we had for all previous years combined, to our Foster Roster. People were suddenly much more available to foster or adopt - as they were thrown into the role of working-from-home. The WFH crowd was/is eager to help; and we feel that positive energy. It’s what drives us to co ..read more

“We had been despondent, sad, depressed, you name it, and Wiley turned all of that around. She made it easier to deal with [our previous dog’s] passing and taught us to share our love another very deserving dog.” — Colleen, Wiley's adopter Written by Colleen Loughran-Tancredi Wiley Coyote came into our lives at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, in March 2020. I had been working from home where the house was eerily quiet since I was home alone all day, and still mourning the loss of our 14 year old Jack in November. I honestly didn't think I was ready for another dog, who was esse ..read more

Written by Sarah Brasky, Executive Director 2020 has brought many interesting conversations to the forefront of animal welfare, including that of the lack of diversity in our movement (See: Best Friends Animal Society’s statement 6/2020), and the new HASS program with American Pets Alive). Foster Dogs has been making a conscious effort to reach beyond our existing network of volunteers, fosters, and adopters, and show that fostering is for everybody - including those people who we weren’t reaching in the past. For the last six months, we have posted every week or two, an amazing advocate on ou ..read more
