Written by Nat Shreffler Bike club at Menlo Elementary was made extra special this past fall thanks to two new learners, Franklin and Adrian. We typically start a club with participants who already know how to ride–this allows us to get rolling and ride and roads to fun destinations. This fall was a reminder that it’s not about the destination,- but the journey. We spent a lot more time in the school yard than usual. Throughout the last three months, workplaces, corporations, and hundreds of individuals have come together and raised more than $162,316 for the Community Cycling Center’s mission of broadening access to bikes and their benefits. We not only have a shop — we also offer an after school Bike Club program developed and run by the programs department of Community Cycling Center(CCC). Holiday Bike Drive Returns!

It has been two years since the Community Cycling Center (CCC) has been able to host its annual Holiday Bike Drive event at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. Before COVID-19 times, CCC worked with various community partners to identify children in need of bicycles, and Trauma Nurses Talk Tough would order brand new helmets so children remain safe in the saddle. CCC’s part was to provide finely tuned bikes, safety lessons and event magic to bring the community together. Written by Natty, Safe Routes To School Coordinator Community Camps are officially done until next summer. Let’s take a look back at some of this year’s highlights! The Community Cycling Center held a 100% free Community Camp for three different communities connected to three different partners: Rose CDC, Cesar Chavez school and Urban Nature Partners PDX. We’ve been working together with volunteers to deliver food out of the NE Emergency Food Program (NEFP) to approximately 180 families in the Cully neighborhood every week. Did you know that the shop hosts an apprentice every year? Since 2017, we’ve been able to provide this opportunity to youth from our various partner communities. The intent of this program is to provide experience and industry connections for young people who are seriously considering a career in the cycling industry — a foot in the door of an industry where women and people of color are largely left out.
