What kind of fabric is normally used for swimsuits?

Okay, so I'm plus size. That being said it can be hard to find swimsuits in a style and/or print that I like. So I'm hoping to figure out what kind of fabric is used for swimsuits so that I can make my own. Does anyone know what is normally used for commercial suits? Or does anyone have a better alternative that works just as well in water? Thank you in advance. Also only slightly unrelated. I take my cat floating with me sometimes while I'm swimming (I know not something you see every day but it's true.) I usually put a towel in the bottom of her floaty to keep her from accidentally puncturi ..read more

How do I mend this? A vintage sweater and not sure how to preserve it so it doesn’t get bigger.

Figured a good first project for the Serger would be to replace its tattered plastic dust cover.

I traced the ripped up plastic dust cover onto some light duck cloth, added a half inch to the dimensions then used a 1/4” seam allowance. In between the maroon interior and birdy exterior there is 1/2” soft foam sheets. Should have quilted it a bit to keep the foam in place though! Used the server to trim and overlock the interior exposed edges of the fabric. About half way through the project, the serger squealed, and then slowed down… some of you already mentioned I should get it serviced and I should have taken your advice before playing with it! Will have it looked at by a profession ..read more

Does anyone know where I can find this pattern?

This was originally sold by Christine Jonson Patterns as a paper pattern, and I really love the neckline on the option on the left. However it seems to be sold out on her website and others when I searched by Designer + title. Link to the original shop Otherwise, does anyone have any patterns to suggest that would have a similar high V neckline to the image on the left (preferably that goes to plus sizes)? submitted by /u/baffledninja [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Straps - stretch or no stretch?
Reddit » Sewing

I'm making a dress using a poly charmeuse fabric. It has a bit of stretch one way. The pattern has straps that are cut 1 1/4" wide, folded in half, sewn and then turned right side out. I realized after sewing the first strap that is has stretch to it. Not sure if I want that or not. I'm thinking of re-cutting the straps so they don't stretch. What's the consensus? Are stretchy straps a bad idea? Will they stretch out? Will they be more or less likely to fall off? submitted by /u/dreasle [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How would you attach these sleeves?

Hi all, I'm in the process of making a cosplay for ABA from guilty gear. I'm trying to decide how I want to approach making her top. I thrifted a pair of white wide leg jeans with a waist wide enough to fit around my bust that I want to turn into the top. My plan is to turn the jeans into a skirt (I know it won't be exact bc of the crotch triangle thing but that's fine) and seam rip down the sides and attach the sleeves, which I plan to make from the bottom part of the pant leg (knee down). My trouble is I'm not sure where to attach the pant legs, should I leave the waist-band in-tact and ..read more

Confused about how to align and sew corners of crotch and inseam on pants pattern?

I’m a beginner sewist following the Free Range Slacks pattern by Sew House Seven. The pattern has you cut out a small flat angled notch on the back of the legs (identical on both legs as seen in my example photos). It has you sew a partial french seam and then finish the raw edge up the leg of the pant. I’ve been watching the sew along videos on YouTube and I thought I aligned them correctly but photo #4 is what it’s supposed to look like and photo #5 is what my seam currently looks like. I’ve only sewn the inseam so far but the front and back crotch corners don’t match up and I can’t fig ..read more

3D Programs for Making Plush Patterns?

Hi! I’m an amateur at plush sewing and my approach to making patterns has been through trial and error on paper. My creations are pretty flat for the most part but I’d like to start making more three-dimensional plush patterns. The trouble is that I have a difficult time translating what I can both imagine and draw three-dimensionally into a working sewing pattern! With that said, is anyone familiar with a computer program for simple 3D modeling? I have experience in the past with Autodesk Maya and it had an unwrap tool, which basically turned the 3D model into a 2D pattern. Of course May ..read more

I got a cute overall but I need help to secure the cleavage

It has a metal snap button in the cleavage. Unfortunately I noticed when I got home that it pops up if I am not careful. (I'm not a graceful person ?) so now I'm thinking of how to fix this. Would it work to sew 3 stretchy strap loops + 3 buttons? (I drew an illustration in picture 2) Or do you have another other idea? Obs! I have no sewing machine so I need to hand sew. submitted by /u/Queen-of-meme [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
