Welcome back! In this second segment of my Sew-iversary post, I’ll share about the various ways I was employed before going solo. While putting together Pt 1 Academics, I predicted Pt 2 would be a quick post. I didn’t remember having many photos from my Employment Era. But after poking around and digging deep into the Archives, I found a bonanza! While only sharing some highlights, this blog post may have more photos than any blog post ever created by anyone in the history of blog posts! It is basically a brand new (wildly outdated) digital portfolio!  Starting with… Continue readin ..read more

Hi there! I’m Brooks Ann Camper and I love making things. You may already know that I’ve been blogging about making custom wedding dresses since 2009 and have been teaching those who sew solo how to design and handcraft garments from their own self-drafted custom-fit patterns online since 2014. But that’s only a part of my story… My sewing origin story started in 1996. That’s 26 years ago! I know a 25 year Sew-iversary post sounds better- but I didn’t think about it last year. I thought about it this year! Continue reading The post My 26th Sew-iversary! Pt 1: Academics appeared first on ..read more

De Nueva Photography It’s the final post in Jenn’s bridalwear blog series! The custom pieces I created in all the previous posts have reached their final destiny: on Jenn!  "Brooks Ann Camper turned my mama's wedding dress into a rehearsal outfit for me and made my bridal shoot veil and wedding veil- With her hands!!!! She preserved my memaw's work (that's my grandmother who made mama's dress) and I loved wearing it. She is the most talented designer, seamstress, and milliner. I'm so glad we met in an ice cream store all those years ago. Also, she is under 5 feet tall which proves t ..read more

In my previous post, I took a little aside in Jenn’s bridal blog series to share one of the custom millinery pieces I made for her. But my seven posts prior were about taking her mom’s 1970 wedding dress apart and hand crafting it into a custom-designed custom-fitted wedding rehearsal top for my friend Jenn.  This post starts just after the basted final fitting– and ends with a finished couture top. I hope you enjoy my epic photo-filled behind-the-seams play-by-play!   Continue reading The post Finishing Jenn’s Couture Wedding Rehearsal Top appeared first on Brooks Ann Camper B ..read more

My previous post in Jenn’s bridalwear blog series shared the basted fitting of her rehearsal day top held at Workroom Social in Brooklyn in September 2019. But the top wasn’t the only basted custom bridalwear I had for Jenn to try on.   For the Brooklyn fitting, I had also basted together a custom veil for Jenn!  But this veil would not be worn on the wedding day, nor with the rehearsal top…  Jenn would be wearing it with a Temperley London wedding dress in a photoshoot with People magazine!   Continue reading The post A veil for Jenn’s photoshoot with Peopl ..read more

Basting and Fitting Jenn’s Top

My previous post was “All About That Lace…”  This post could be called “All About That Baste…” If you’ve been following me for any amount of time you’ll probably know that I love basting. I find it totally wild that those who sew for themselves rarely employ this valuable technique. Basting is sewing with temporary stitches. Since temporary stitches are soft and quickly removable, there’s no risk and no pressure for perfection. Basting allows you to stay in the moment, work one step at a time, make improvements, and learn the answers to all of your questions- all before ..read more

All About That Lace…

When the story of turning Jenn’s mom’s wedding dress into a rehearsal day top left off, the vintage dress had been taken apart. Its satin fabric had been cut after pinning the mockup pieces as a backing fabric. Catch up here.  The post you are reading now is all about that lace… Jenn’s mom Lydia wore a wedding dress that was mostly satin- only the bodice and the sleeves were lace. Jenn’s top design also has the bodice and sleeves made with lace, but the style and sizing of each piece changed in a way that I couldn’t reuse the lace from Lydia’s dress.  No worries! Lydia also wore a ..read more

Welcome to the 5th post in my custom bridalwear blog series about Jenn! Thanks for following along! In my previous post, I created a second mockup of Jenn’s rehearsal dinner top. We rejoin the story in the summer of 2019 for the second mockup fitting- which took place immediately before Jenn’s bridal shower. The 2nd Mockup Fitting Jenn lives in Brooklyn, but the party was at her parents’ home- about an hour away from where I live in North Carolina! My husband Charles and I got there early, so Jenn and I could work through a mockup fitting in her parents’ bedroom!  Here’s how it ..read more

Jenn’s Sketches to Second Mockup

During the process of working with my friend Jenn to create custom bridal millinery and transform her mom’s wedding dress into a rehearsal dinner top, the steps of my custom process got all mixed up. Jenn is a professional actress whose schedule wouldn’t allow for much in-person time before her October 2019 wedding, but we didn’t want that to stop us. So I customized my custom process! Good thing I love custom! So even though we’d already completed our first mockup fitting, I was only now ready to start sketching the designs!
