Its been so long since I've been here but once I started to embark on my new project my head starting swimming and the only place I could think of for some straight answers is right here. You fine nerds have never steered me wrong before!
The Plan
Build a modern computer desk workstation from the ground up, getting rid of my old desk and old computers in the process. Replace with one large screen and one keyboard/mouse to control everything.
The Moving Parts
My partner got a big promotion (hooray) and will also be working from home a lot more (also hooray) but her new position has put a st ..read more

Any ideas on how to fix this? This is an otherwise pristine top case - no cracks or anything, so I really hope there's something I can do. The button is plastic-riveted to the top case, and I can't say I've ever done a power button replacement on one of these - when I was a genius, we just did whole top case replacements ..read more

Anyone got some extras they don't mind offloading for cheap? Looks like I can get 32GB without the big heat spreaders for about $50 on eBay... 16GB for that price if I want the OEM heat spreaders. My current setup uses RAM with regular heat spreaders (not the Apple ones), and I've not had any problems with it ..read more

This thing's ODD is dying a slow and painful death - the eject mechanism seems to be borked completely, and it's a bit noisy when reading discs.
It's IDE, and I know Apple was picky about drive compatibility. What should I get to replace this drive? Is there a particular make/model known for its longevity? This will pretty much just be to image discs as ISOs and DMGs ..read more

I haven't done anything with iOS in ages. I just got my hands on a 16GB third gen iPad (Retina display and 30-pin dock connector) currently running iOS 9.3.
Is it worth jailbreaking this thing? Can I still snag old versions of apps so I can at least make it semi-useful? The productivity stuff works fine with my Exchange account, but the browser is already long in the tooth, so being able to install some apps would be nice (SSH client, that kind of thing).
If it's jailbreakable, what do you all recommend? I did some reading online, but a whole ton of what I found read like it was AI-generated ..read more

Word up nerds!
I have a project I'm developing and as part of it I'm building a list. This list is, "A history of computing in 50 objects".
The idea of this list is to provide actual objects that can be spun off to discuss pivotal developments, themes in the history of computing. So things not ideas. The ideas come from the things.
Examples:
The UK's digital domesday book system. An early example of digital obscelence.
Tim Berners Lee's Next cube: developed the www on it
614 18th Avenue, Menlow Park: Homebrew computer clubs first meeting place.
Bahkshali manuscript: first use of zero as a 0 ..read more

An interviewer once asked John “Do you think Ringo is the best drummer in the world?” and he replied “Ringo isn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles”. It seems that all of the boys could play drums, and I think Paul was playing drums during their Cavern days - he certainly played them on a few of the later pieces (“The Ballad of John and Yoko” is one). But somehow people have gotten the idea that Ringo wasn’t a very good drummer. This somehow ignores why the most popular, innovative, and frankly powerful musical act in the world might keep a poor musician in the band. They surely wouldn’t ha ..read more

My wife was trying to purchase tax software for her MBP (13” 2017) The software requires MacOS 10.15.7 (Catalina) at minimum. The MBP is a few updates behind, running 10.13.6 (High Sierra) OK, says I, I will just download the 10.15.7 combo installer from Apple and bring the MBP up to meet the minimum.
Nope.
The 10.15.7 update requires 10.15.0 to run. OK, I’ll download 10.15.0 and...
Nope.
The 10.15.0 installer is no longer available.
Looking through all the installers available from Apple’s Support area, it looks like no base OS installers are available (except, of course, for Sonoma.)
