Mistakenly launched, but did't carry out an OS upgrade (Monterey>Sonoma). How do I get rid of the macOS installer boot menu item?

I'm running Monterey (with OCLP) on a Late 2012 Mac mini "Core i7" (Intel Ivy Bridge). The model identifier is Macmini6,2. The macOS upgrade got mistakenly launched from macOS System Preferences. Fortunately, the multi-boot setup on the machine (Linux/macOS/Windows) makes the boot selection screen (provided by OCLP loader) appear every time, and I'm able to boot into and use Monterey (no installer) just fine, but there's a new "macOS installer" boot menu item now. Is there a way to get rid of it? I see that there are extra snapshots (bless and MSUPrepareUpdate) on the system volume, but I'm no ..read more

When my old job closed shop, I was given my old Mac laptop to keep. It is running Catalina. I like to reset it to factory setting but it requires administrator log in info which I do not have. Is there any way I can override administrator log in? I tried to turn off FileVault but that also requires admin username and password ..read more

Detecting which process/program is running and consuming energy while Mac is sleep

I am recently having an issue with my MacBook M1 Max which uses a relatively high energy while in sleep mode. I disabled power nap (Wake for network access), yet it uses almost high CPU time and network bandwidth. How can I detect which process or app is causing this issue? Here are a few graphs: my MacBook was sleeping from 3 pm last day until 6 am today, but the battery drops more than 20 percent. Note that I usually have docker desktop running and almost 6-7 containers are loaded and running on it like postgres and tomcat which can be the source of issue but I can't verify it. How can I have a non-elevated script execute another specific script as root without requiring a password from the user?

I have a script, let's call it on-event.sh, that's going to be run at specific times, such as when a particular application launches or quits. The script itself will run as the current user (not root) since I'll be using BetterTouchTool to execute it. However, on-event.sh needs to somehow trigger the execution of another script that must run as root, which I'll call run-as-root.sh. run-as-root.sh will execute some commands to load or unload specific third party launch daemons (not my own), hence the need to run as root. Since it'll all be happening in the background, it needs to happen without ..read more

So far I have attempted the answer/instruction to this question. I also attempted to UEFI boot install windows 10 from start up manager by creating a ExFAT Flash Drive with the contents of a mounted windows 10 iso copied to them. Unfortunately only the MacOS and Recovery showed up in manager. This is the info I received from Terminal after inputing diskutil list /dev/disk0 (internal, physical): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.1 GB disk0 1: EFI EFI ..read more

Mac Mini failover experience with "modified sine wave" UPS?
Stack Exchange

Does anyone here have any experience with UPS failovers using "modified sine wave" supplies on a modern Mac Mini (M1/M2/M3)? The consensus here (1 2 3) is that you should stick with pure sine wave inverters for MacBooks. But I've found no agreement anywhere on modified sine wave UPSs for non-battery Macs. Some say they will not work because of active PFC. Some say they do work and are safe. And the only reports I've been able to find with actual experience are clearly for older Macs (pre-2019). (Edit: I've been looking into this for two weeks now and have come across a LOT of opinions. I've pu ..read more

I cannot find anything on this binary - It does seems to function as stated when I use the command to open files, but I never installed it nor do I see it as a default executable in the bin folder of other Macs. Not sure why it exists as a log in item: Any ideas? Perhaps part of a .pkg that came with something else ..read more

Using Xcode 15.3 when running a UITest, I take a screenshot let screenshot = XCUIScreen.main.screenshot() let attachment = XCTAttachment(screenshot: screenshot) attachment.lifetime = .keepAlways add(attachment) Looking at the test report, I see t = 2.59s Added attachment named 'Screenshot of main screen (ID 1).png' so the screenshot is being taken, but there is no sign of an attachment link or any other linkage. If I go to the derivedData volume and open the relevant xcresult package, there is a Data folder but no Attachment folder. If I go to the app.xctestplan configuration t ..read more

I deleted the USB 10/100/1000 network interface service and clicked no when asked if I'd like to have it returned on next connection. How can it be restored or all network settings reset? This previous question's terminal commands answers do not work on macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 on a MacBook Pro 14" Nov 2023 (M3 Pro version) and Dell WD19DCS dock.
