Golf in Ontario – Yours to Discover

I acknowledge I am riffing on an old provincial marketing tagline, but it seems appropriate. Call it a teaser shot. Muskoka golf is known for its colours, elevation and granite rock. This shot from North Granite Ridge doesn’t have all these but remains a favourite image. As I examine my Canadian golf course bucket list in the midst of a global pandemic, I realize that within my own province of Ontario are numerous courses I have yet to experience.  And while Canadian provinces like Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia and even Alberta boast golf which make them a destinatio ..read more

Reflections from 2020

What a year. For people playing golf that game has safely provided a respite from the global pandemic. Golf in Canada enjoyed a record year for participation and based on the availability on the tee sheet at my home course I can attest to the emerging popularity of the game. Covid-19 may go down as one of the greatest drivers to help grow the game than anything else in recent memory. I want to thank the people who supported my blog. I am not alone as a golf writer/blogger who’s seen record numbers; seems we’re not just playing the game more! And while there’s been extensive travel restrictions ..read more

The 16th at Wolf Creek’s Links Course in Ponoka, AB. For a day of 36, the final nine at the Links course may be the best of the lot. Marvelous layout and design by Rod Whitman My itinerary was an aggressive one; 54 holes over two days. But when it’s Jasper Park and Wolf Creek, simply make the time and make it happen. The back nine at Wolf Creek’s Links course is so good. Designer Rod Whitman did some masterful work. I am eager to get back and experience this course again, maybe even seek to get a win against @golfismental who has won both matches against me. Here is my review of the Wolf Creek ..read more

This fall, my weekly golf group saw one its regulars move to southwestern Ontario. It was only fitting to meet up and celebrate and say thanks to a friend This image has invoked more sentiments than I had originally expected. Seems people could really resonate with the experience of having a playing partner in your weekly foursome needing to step away. Don Grainger will be missed, Wednesdays at Hidden Lake around 3:30, especially when any of us are feeling just a little too good about our golf game! Scout out local courses, Don, we’re coming to visit! The post 2020 In Pictures – Day 3 appeared ..read more

I suspect I am deeply in the minority. Catching a round at Cobble Beach with hardly a breath of wind, given its location right on Georgian Bay, well, call me lucky. Here is the 17th hole. Cobble Beach is about 2.5 hours from my home in Burlington, ON and I’d go back in a heartbeat, in fact, I am hopeful to make it an annual excursion north of Owen Sound to play this enjoyable course. To have a perfect weather day, comfortable temperatures and practically no wind, I appreciated from the moment we arrived! Cobble Beach is a worthy top 100 course in Canada, but more important, it is simply fun to ..read more

Wolf Creek’s Old Course in Ponoka, AB is simply an underrated gem. On the heels of a day of golf at Jasper Park, I was up early and headed south from Edmonton to meet my buddy @golfismental for 36 holes at one of Alberta’s best public plays. I didn’t know much about Wolf Creek and following the jaw dropping experience of Jasper Park I didn’t expect to be wowed. But I was. Here’s my review on the Wolf Creek Old Course. An Incomplete Look at Golf Collectables

I really took notice of collectibles when visiting my cousin in Chicago several years ago.  A bachelor (at the time) and an avid golfer, he was seeking to get his hands on a set of clubs from his junior days to present, refinish them and display them in his dining room (which was more a golf shrine than actual dining area).  He was up to about 6 sets and needed 2 or 3 more to complete his collection.  His late brother was the one who inspired my own Canadian Golf Bucket List and he showed me a massive bag, full of ball markers from courses Paul had played.  He was saving th ..read more

Embracing golf’s off-season

This is about our off season here in Canada. Not the PGA Tour, where the off-season is 3 days long before wraparound events start up. In Ontario, October 31 was the end of the golf season in terms of officially recording scores toward your index. In what was the most unique golf season, likely for many of us, I ended with an index of 12.5 This is something I am not impressed with. I know people don’t care what anyone (including me) shoots, but each of us wants to play our best. Historically my off-season regime was watching the PGA Tour on TV, eating chips, and maybe going to an indoor simulat ..read more

This is not a new story.  There are thousands of stories like this across Canada; weekly golf groups who tee it up at their local club.  But for many reasons groups change.  Ours is changing. It last changed three years ago when I joined as a fourth to begin the season of Men’s Night at Hidden Lake.  Successfully passing the audition, I was invited back.  I haven’t looked back and our weekly games have enjoyed layers of light competition.  We’re all seeking to play our best, we were on unique teams within our Men’s league, and then there was the skins game we play ..read more
