Brooches, arranged in two branching rows reminiscent of a family tree, portray jewelry colleagues, gallerists, curators, and peers whom the maker has encountered throughout his career
The brooches emit a gentle sound and crinkle when handled. The artist, Tore Svensson, used veneer painted with seven thin layers of acrylic because he needed a portable medium while traveling
One can decode much information from a simplified outline in a streamlined vector graphic

Oslo, Norway, March 31, 2024
Tone Vigeland is widely considered a pioneer within the field of art jewelry. Born in 1938 into one of Norway’s most prominent artist families, Tone entered Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole (today called Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts) in 1955. In 1957 she began her goldsmith training at Oslo Yrkesskole (Oslo Vocational School) and at David Andersen’s silver workshop, in Oslo. She later joined the PLUS cooperative in Fredrikstad, Norway, where some of her most popular designs were produced. In 1963 she left PLUS to focus on her ..read more

In Munich, I’ve met people from all around the world and with different connections to the field of jewelry. I asked them to talk about the main reason they came.

Munich Jewellery Week (MJW) is like fungi, with exhibitions popping up throughout the city.
For many of those holding these shows, MJW means organizing an exhibition abroad in a space they’ve only seen online, with limited setup time. Creating a scenography entails not only selecting materials that are easily transportable or locally available, but also striving to stand out among many events, all while ensuring the presentation supports the work.
Faced with numerous challenges, and opportunities, exhibitors experiment with presentation strategies. MJW is a playground.

Soulmates: An Exhibition in Honor of Kadri Mälk
February 28–March 3, 2024
Galerie Biro, Munich, Germany

“Love me or leave me or let me be lonely.”[1] These words, taken from an interview I conducted with Kadri Mälk, echoed in my mind as I walked Soulmates: An Exhibition in Honor of Kadri Mälk, hosted by Galerie Biró. The tone in the space was ceremonial—it felt only appropriate to speak in a whisper. I sensed Mälk in every corner and in every choice.

The work of a gallerist can sometimes be a thankless one for its hidden labor. This is often someone fueled by a passion for the field, coming to run a gallery as a maker, a collector, or an enthusiast.
To be at the fair during Munich Jewellery Week involves a large commitment. You arrive days prior, to sort customs and set up. You’re present in your booth and open 9 a.m.–6 p.m. You come early and leave late. There’s a sprint at the end of the final day to wrap, crate, and log all works to be transported back as the carpet is literally pulled up from under you. (Though some stay for days after ..read more
