Trailside Charging Stations Are the Future: Polaris Partnership Builds Network to Power Off-Road Adventures

Our caravan of five Polaris Ranger side-by-sides had to cross a bridge over a creek where there was a lone man fishing, enjoying the isolation and peace of the backcountry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I felt horrible, as I had done for decades when trying to coexist with other outdoor enthusiasts while enjoying off-road motorsports. But this encounter between us off-road riders and the fisherman was different; he waved. This was the first time I’d ever ridden an off-road vehicle (ORV) within arm’s-length of any human-powered outdoor enthusiast and received anything but negativity. Our ..read more

Blown Away: Craft Women’s ADV Essence Wind Running Tights Review

I’ve lived in the third coldest valley in the lower 48 for more than 10 years. While searching for the best women’s winter running tights, I can’t say I’ve gotten used to that piece of mountain life: -30 is still bone-chilling. The snow and chilly wind stick around through spring, well into May. True summer — without longstanding freezing temps overnight — hits around June. And not only do I have singletrack and mountain traverses I’d eager to check off my list, I am also my husband’s trail and ultrarunning training partner. He’s training for the Crazy Mountain 100 in Montana at the end of Ju ..read more

Küat Recalls 80K Hitch Bike Racks Over Drop Risk

If you own a Küat Transfer v2 bike rack, stop using it immediately or have it fixed. That’s the message from Küat, which announced a recall of more than 80,000 Transfer v2 bike racks last week after customers complained of a potential defect. In a statement on its website, the outdoor retailer said the pivot cam on the rack can disengage, allowing the bike carrier to unexpectedly drop. “This malfunction could cause a bicycle to fall off the product while a subject vehicle is in motion, as well as injury or property damage to the product, the bicycle, and to the subject vehicle and other vehic ..read more

There are so many folding knives aimed at the outdoors these days that there’s bound to be some overlap. In some cases, that overlap might even be intentional — so intentional, in fact, that when you Google one knife and another one comes up in the results, you can confirm you’re not crazy. This is really happening. For years, the Benchmade Bugout has been a dream come true for those folks who want a durable, reliable, medium-duty folding pocket knife without the heft. At 1.85 ounces, Benchmade aced the weight challenge. It also hit a home run with the choice to go with S30V blade steel ..read more

‘It Was Pure Violence’: Grizzly Attack Survivor Recounts Horrifying Encounter and the Decisions That Saved Him

There was almost no warning when the grizzly bear attacked Shayne Patrick on May 9 in Grand Teton National Park. When it happened, he had been on a short, unassuming dog walk on a popular road that skirts Grand Teton Lake. Offhandedly, he’d brought his camera, binoculars, knife, and bear spray. Had he not had those items, he is certain he’d be a dead man today. Patrick is a 35-year-old who lives in New Hampshire with his wife and dog. He’s been in the Army for 17 years and has been an outdoorsman all his life. He’s an established rock climber and hunter in the Northeast. He’s also an avid wil ..read more

Confirmed: Sub-$25,000 Jeep Renegade EV Coming in 2027

EV sales growth has slowed sharply in recent months, and pricing is a critical concern for many potential buyers — the typical EV costing nearly $57,000 in May, according to Kelley Blue Book.  The new Jeep Wagoneer S, the off-road brand’s first all-electric model in North America, certainly doesn’t fall into the “affordable” category, starting at $72,000 for the Launch Edition. But Jeep has something else in mind for budget-minded buyers — at least if they’re willing to wait a few years. 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S Trailhawk concept at NYC reveal event; (photo/Headlight News) Today, the Detroit ..read more

The 12 Most Fuel-Efficient 2024 4×4 SUVs
GearJunkie
by Evan Williams

Thanks to hybrid, diesel, and even fully electric power, driving a real SUV doesn’t mean a world of gas pump pain anymore. We’ve found the most fuel-efficient 4×4 SUVs to give you maximum capability with minimum fueling costs. The line between crossover and SUV can be pretty blurry. Call us old-fashioned because we think of an SUV as having a frame that’s separate from the body of the vehicle. The suspension and body are bolted to that frame. It’s what gives the SUV its ruggedness — truck-like bones underneath that let it work hard. Are there exceptions to that rule? Of course. So, we’ll call ..read more

From Yoga to Town and Trails: prAna Chakara 7/8 Legging Review

When I first put on the prAna Chakara 7/8 Legging, I didn’t expect much. I thought it’d be an average pair of exercise leggings for women. As soon as I started moving, I realized there was more to these leggings than meets the eye. Crafted with recycled nylon, these leggings offer support and sustainability that sets them apart. In a world where yoga pants are somewhat ubiquitous, it can be challenging to find a design that fits the bill and goes beyond the studio. prAna created a workout tight that grants the freedom to flow through sequences, tackle a HIIT workout, or venture outdoors for a ..read more

The Ultimate Guide to Overland Events in North America
GearJunkie
by Bryon Dorr

While its roots can be traced back to Prescott, Ariz., and the first Overland Expo in 2009, the North American overland events landscape has drastically changed, especially in the last half-decade. Besides the Overland Expo in Arizona, the early years also saw a handful of Overland Rally events, most backed by Overland International, sprout up across the country. These regional events helped introduce thousands to overland travel and were more community-driven than industry-focused. While the same ethos exists between the smaller local events and massive Overland Expos today, there is a lot m ..read more
