Villa stun Arsenal as Emery gets one over his former club to dent their title chances

If you asked me six hours ago if Aston Villa could beat Arsenal at the Emirates I would have said no. Despite our league position, Villa have been very unpredictable of late, doing enough to win games without looking as good as they did earlier in the season. I wasn’t even sure what side Unai Emery would name when he rested many of his big stars in the recent 4-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad. Given the results this weekend, the result for Villa is massive. Of course, it means nothing if we don’t follow this up with a win at Villa Park next weekend but given Tottenham still have to p ..read more

Advantage Villa after narrow win over Lille

Aston Villa were made heavy favourites to win the UEFA Europa Conference League very early in the competition but I am sure most people would agree, if they are going to win it, they will have to earn it. Although Emery’s side has had a pretty comfortable competition so far, French side Lille were always likely to be a difficult opponent. Similar to Villa, Les Dogues are enjoying a good season and have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season. They currently sit 4th in Ligue 1, just 3 points behind Monaco. The French authorities also like to give their sides every oppor ..read more

Up the European Aston Villa

Erika LaBrie’s name won’t mean much to most Villa fans, she’s the woman who in 2007 married the Eiffel Tower, although more recent reports suggest she’s now in love with a fence. Erika’s love for an inanimate object is difficult to comprehend, or at least it was, as I find myself falling head over heels for that shiny silver vase-type thing awarded to the winners of the Europa Conference League. Europe’s third-tier competition has taken a small piece of my heart. 1996 was the last time Villa laid their hands on some silverware, Leeds United swept aside in a 3-0 victory at the old Wembley, but ..read more

Villa lack ‘big team mentality’ as they salvage a draw in a six-goal thriller

Ollie Watkins blasted his teammates after they threw away a two-goal lead against Brentford at Villa Park. “I’m not belittling my team, I’m part of it. We need to somehow figure out when we’re 2-0 up how to shut up shop, It’s frustrating. We lacked that big-team mentality where they kill games off, which is really disappointing. Maybe we just don’t have that maturity yet or game intelligence.” This isn’t the first time that we have thrown away two-goal advantages and it’s now an advantage to Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the top four. Unai Emery opted to give many of his big stars a rest i ..read more

If you asked me yesterday afternoon if I thought we could beat Manchester City at the Etihad I would have said no. Having said that, I felt we could have given them a game. Well, that was until the team news came out at 7.15 pm yesterday. Unai Emery opted to rest a lot of his stronger side and although Pep Guardiola decided to rest Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bryne, it was still a strong-looking City side. Villa fans have taken it in different ways. Some were upset at the thought that we rolled over before a ball was kicked while others felt it was worth resting players so they are fit for the ..read more

Exclusive Interview: Patrik Berger talks Aston Villa

We had the opportunity to speak with former Aston Villa and Liverpool winger Patrik Berger where he discussed his time at Villa Park. Speaking exclusively to AVillaFan, thanks to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds, Patrik Berger said he enjoyed his time at Aston Villa but felt he was very unlucky with injuries. Berger discussed how big Villa are as a club and when the late Doug Ellis approached him, he didn’t hesitate to join the club. The former Czech Republic international discussed time on the training pitch, away from the game and his friends within the Aston Villa dressi ..read more
