Denim Fit Guide Dance
Mom's the Word

Oh if only it was possible to create a denim fit guide!  It's more like a dance to fit denim in the shop. Online? According to everyone who enters the shop, virtually impossible-pun intended!  The number of times moms com into the shop either wearing not-cheap jeans that they hate, wearing cheap jeans that they hate, wearing jeans that slide down or jeans that are too tight..or saying that there are six boxes they need to return? Way too many.  Denim rules our wardrobes and getting denim that fits ...when you're pregnant?  Oh the smiles we see, the joy on your faces, it's m ..read more

Newborns: The S's and why you care
Mom's the Word

There are Karp's 5  S's and there are Siegel's 4 S's Both are key to an important parenting S, Sanity! Karp wrote a book that you have probably heard of, The Happiest Baby on the Block.  It's a good read.  My opinion.  Someone came in today and thanked me for sharing the abbreviated version, which means I shared the 5 S's and told her that they were valuable when you have a new baby.  So, first, here they are: Swaddle (and do it without fear, baby was in a very close confined space recently, your womb, and this feels good to them, even if they resist which some do) S ..read more

Newborn Sleep Secrets: 4 Tools for 3 Weeks (& beyond)
Mom's the Word

Teaching a Newborn About Sleep Weeks 1 to 3 Here is the truth, for better or worse, and it's really important to understand this:  you cannot teach a newborn about sleep. Sorry, it's just a fact. It's not you. It's not your baby. It's science.  Newborns sleep around 16 hours in a 24 hour day. What most of us don't get our heads around (because you really can't until your baby is born) is that that 16 hours is done in bite sized chunks, one, maybe if we're lucky, two hours.  Some babies will go three hours and parents want to throw a party! Smart parents know that that 3 hours mi ..read more

It's Body Appreciation Day!
Mom's the Word

No, it's not. We just made that up.  But, we do feel strongly that it should be a thing, and we feel strongly that it shouldn't be just a day! How about a year?  How about a lifetime? Almost daily we hear women who struggle with the changes that their bodies are going through.  Frustrated. Sad. Angry. And, we get it, it's hard!  It's totally strange to have so little control over something that we used to have at least a degree of control over. We suddenly focus on all the imperfections- our perceived imperfections. I remember a client telling me with glee once, of her 3 mo ..read more

Real MOM Models 2021-amazing!!!
Mom's the Word

Our clients=our models, our models=our clients. A lot has changed in the last 15 months, but that has not. And our recent shoot?  They have all been pregnant or had a baby in a pandemic.  It's been a 15 fifteen months!  Two of leases came up in the pandemic and it was an easy decision in March and April to not sign one. It was also an easy decision to partner with our wonderful fellow moms at One Love to pull together an informal Keepin' It Real shoot. What it would look like? We had no idea! Well, that was fabulous! For 22 years we have used clients as models. (A few still stop ..read more

It's okay to not know....anything!
Mom's the Word

really? What did you know about pregnancy.... before you were pregnant? What did you know about newborns....before you had one? What do you think you know about newborns if you haven't had one yet? Toddlers? Teens? Yeah, until you are actually there...it's hard to actually know!!  ? And that is just a fact! There is a whole heck of a lot that we as parents do not know.  And, that is okay!  There is no amount of reading books, listening to podcasts, watching experts on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook etc. which will make you the perfect parent all of the time.  It may make y ..read more

Our Word for 2021? Celebrate!
Mom's the Word
by sarah pollak

Well, naturally,  Mom's the word of every year? For 2021, CELEBRATE ?is our pick. Really? After 2020? As a small retail brick and mortar business? Celebrate?  Yes. Really. 2020 has humbled us, as it has millions of other small fashion retailers, restaurants and more, AND it has done for us what it has done for so many other people, it has provided us with a new perspective.  So, we choose to CELEBRATE what we do have, not fret and fear for an uncertain and unknown future.  We went there way back when in April and May.  It was distinctly not pretty. ? So, what ..read more

Are You Okay?
Mom's the Word

2020 has been humbling in so many ways. I can't say that Meghan Markle usually gets me thinking.  But, humbled again. I read her article in the NYT , titled, The Losses We Share and cried. Why?   "Loss and pain have plagued every one of us in 2020, in moments both fraught and debilitating." She ends with "Are we OK? We will be." At a recent family dinner I was reminded once again, that it is OK. Our business has dropped 90%. And we are OK. One of the diners was born with the umbilical cord around their neck, 3 times, they got a 1 on their first Apgar. (I was there.) They are ..read more

Overalls: Classic Style

What does classic mean to YOU? Black turtlenecks, anything plaid, cowboy boots and overalls.  That's my list. And, I still own, and wear, the overalls that we carried when we opened and I was pregnant with my second.  23 years ago.  Yikes.  Risky?  Maybe.  But I love a good overall. And, yes, it has to be good.  See below for my definition of not good in a maternity overall.  Because, opinions?  Yep, I have them.  Not right or wrong, but mine.   The above are a pair of Calvin Klein size M which can no doubt be located online somewher ..read more

MOM's Fave Shop Small Shops

What better time than 2020 to Shop Small Business-this Saturday, and forever.  The same reasons that Small Business Saturday started still are true in 2020.  The facts are: more than 90% of small businesses give back to their communities approx $60 out of every $100 spent at local retailers stays in your community (as opposed to $43 spent at chain stores and $0 for online) It's no secret that a lot of small shops are struggling in 2020. Do you like your neighborhood commercial streets?  No time like the present to buy a present, and maybe you deserve one too, eh? Win/win! And ..read more
