Social justice activism has made Google Gemini into a laughingstock

If Google CEO Sundar Pichai is serious about his company maintaining any kind of position at the vanguard of the AI revolution, it's going to have to do a lot better than the embarrassing AI chatbot Gemini. There's no excuse, for example, for such an important new product from a tech giant of Google's size and stature producing laughably inaccurate images of historical figures; nor any excuse for refusing to state that pedophilia is objectively bad ("Pedophiles are not necessarily dangerous" is a statement this ridiculous chatbot actually produced); or taking the absurd posture that misgender ..read more

Lenovo's concept ThinkBook laptop with a transparent display is easily one of the most exciting things from MWC 2024. But that's a product that's several years away from launching... if it ever even matures past the concept stage. Lenovo introduced several new ThinkPad laptops in Barcelona that are actually ready to be released and will soon be available to purchase. The list includes the ThinkPad T14 Gen 5, ThinkPad T14s Gen 5, ThinkPad T16 Gen 3, ThinkPad X12 Detachable Gen 2, and ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 Gen 4. The naming scheme might be complicated, but fans of the ThinkPad and ThinkBook lines ..read more

Lenovo brings at least one exciting concept device each year to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It's usually a Lenovo computer of some sort, which isn't ready for mass consumption because the technology to mass produce it isn't yet available. But these concepts showcase innovations that might make it into future commercial products down the line. That's to say, the Lenovo transparent laptop that leaked ahead of MWC is real. But you can't buy the ThinkBook Transparent Display Laptop, and it's unclear if this notebook will ever graduate from its current status as a concept gadget. I don't t ..read more

Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 14 Ultra earlier this week in China, but that event only gave us a tiny taste of what was about to come at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday. Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi 14 Ultra version that will hit international markets starting with Europe. The Chinese Android device vendor went out of its way to drive one massive point home: The Xiaomi 14 Ultra isn't just the best camera Xiaomi ever made, it's the best camera around. The Honor Magic 6 Pro is the first new flagship smartphone to debut at MWC 2024. We knew the device was going to be announced because it leaked, but also because Honor has been teasing some of its marquee features. Examples include the second-generation silicon-carbon battery that works well even at freezing temperatures, the new "sportography" feature, and the Magic 6 Pro's ability to track your eyes and generate responses.  That was just scratching the surface. The Magic 6 Pro has plenty of interesting features that Honor didn't tease, with AI powering several of them. Perhaps one of t ..read more

Apple surprised everyone a few months ago when it announced that the Messages app would support RCS in addition to iMessage and SMS. That happened at a time when Google was relentlessly attacking the blue bubbles, the EU was considering forcing Apple to open up iMessage, and apps like Beeper Mini were finding novel ways to bring iMessage to Android.  Earlier this week, we learned why Apple decided to bring RCS support to the iPhone. It wasn't Google applying pressure or the EU's new Digital Markets Act (DMA) law that threatened iMessage. It was China's new regulations for 5G phones that ..read more

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 has taken over Barcelona for MWC 2024

Like every year for the better part of a decade, late February finds me in Barcelona, Spain, where the Mobile World Congress takes place. Until a few years ago, MWC was also the home of Samsung's latest Galaxy S flagship phone. Samsung would unveil the newest Galaxy S models while simultaneously mounting a massive marketing campaign. The entire town would be covered with Galaxy S posters teasing or showing off the new Galaxy S model in the days ahead of the Sunday event. Few others were able to mount similarly enormous campaigns. Huawei was one of the few phone makers that actually fought Sam ..read more

With Apple Vision Pro available for almost a month now, there are several reasons to buy this spatial computer. Still, many people have returned their devices, as they thought it's not quite there yet. For a $3,499 starting price, Apple Vision Pro still needs to improve a lot. That said, one way to improve this spatial computer is through software updates. Thankfully, graphic designer Parker Ortolani gives a glimpse of what he expects of a future visionOS 2 update, which will likely see a tease during WWDC 2024. With that in mind, these are seven features I hope Apple Vision Pro adds to visio ..read more

You better not cry while wearing the Apple Vision Pro

Here's an important warning for the Apple Vision Pro that I hadn't considered: Make sure you don't start crying while watching emotional content. I haven't even had the chance to watch any tear-jerker movies or TV shows on the Vision Pro since it isn't available in Europe. Not officially, at least. But it turns out that crying isn't supported. The Vision Pro isn't water resistant, so you should avoid getting it wet. That's according to Apple, though the company doesn't specifically mention tears in its warnings. As for the actual act of crying, well, one Vision Pro tester says that's not exac ..read more
