My mum has worked as a dementia care worker for over 18 years now and whilst I’ve always been aware of what a demanding job she has, it’s only been in the last few weeks during the COVID-19 lockdown that I’ve truly started to realise how difficult, how scary, but equally how rewarding her job really is. I know, I know, this post is a huge jump in topic from my usual baking and recipe type post but I started to think about the stories my Mum was telling me and I realised that actually, I’d really like to tell […]

Despite baking lots and running a professional cake company I very rarely, if ever, bake anything bread related. I’ve seen recipes that look and sound incredible but as soon as I see the ingredient ‘yeast‘ I freak out and revert back to a good old brownie or chunky cookie – these are the types of things I can bake with my eyes closed! For those of you who want to jump straight to the recipe, click here – Cinnamon Roll Recipe for Beginners For those that don’t mind a bit of waffling, carry on! I’m not sure why I get […]

Well that’s a mouthful of a title isn’t it! There’s no real name for these cookies but I woke up this morning craving the type of cookies you usually only get in American bakeries. When I went to New York last year I had a cookie that was probably the best cookie I’ve ever eaten. Chunky, generously filled, super chocolatey and incredibly melt-in-the-mouth, I’ve never found any like them since. I had a little nosy online to see what recipes I could find, spotted a few that looked good, then tinkered around a little bit and came up with these […]

Despite caring a great deal about skincare and taking care of myself I don’t really blog about beauty related stuff. Occasionally I might mention a new facewash or moisturiser I’ve found on Instagram or Twitter, but it’s just not something I’ve ever thought about talking about on here. I’m not sure it’ll become a regular thing, mainly because I’m in a routine so don’t use new stuff that often and I know what I like. I’m also against using products that aren’t cruelty free or don’t use recyclable or better still, reusable packaging. When it comes to beauty treatments I’ve […]

It seems like forever ago that Steve and I went to California when in fact it really wasn’t that long ago at all. January was a great month to visit, mainly because the weather was a lot cooler so we found flights and hotels to be a little bit cheaper than usual, (always a good thing). At the time of booking our flights to Los Angeles we’d not made any plans about the route we’d take so when we eventually did get around to planning our trip, it made sense to have California’s second largest city, San Diego, as our […]

Bournemouth was the very first seaside town I visited when I relocated down south from Yorkshire. It was also the very first beach my son Coby visited as a baby, along with the being the first time he dipped his tiny chubby toes in the English Channel and shovelled handfuls of sand in his mouth…Why do babies do that?! Beaches on the South Coast It seems everyone in Reading and its surrounding towns like to flock to a couple of beaches on the South Coast when the weather is nice. Bournemouth is one of them, along with West Wittering. Hastings […]

I’m currently writing this blog post whilst in my beautiful hotel room at the Grade II listed Grand Hotel in York, the first and only 5* hotel in York that offers a true 5* experience. I’ve been out in town to some of my favourite bars and if I’m being honest, I’m a little bit tipsy. Rolling in past the very charming doormen in top hats, gliding up to the 2nd floor in the lift and through my heavy dark oak hotel room door I was absolutely dying to start writing this post. I’m not entirely sure why but I […]

Going on holiday at the beginning of the year is completely new to me and I’m incredibly excited about our Californian road trip which is coming up VERY soon. The countdown is officially ON! Steve and I have been researching, planning, swapping hotels and changing cars so much that at one point I was beginning to feel like we’d never be able to finalise it all. But, a couple of nights ago we got our act together and made some firm decisions meaning we now have the best itinerary and plans firmly made. I’ve taken tips and ideas of what to do […]

On my last visit home to Yorkshire I hopped on the train from York to Leeds with my oldest (length of time known, not age) friend Jo, to join Leeds Food Tours on a four-hour foodie adventure of some of the most delicious independent eateries in central Leeds. As a child I’d go to Leeds with my Mum every so often for an alternative day out to York, or if I had some birthday money to spend we’d also go to Leeds as back then it was better than York for shops; both in size and quality. Later on in […]

What’s your favourite go-to bake? For me it’s always a brownie. A classic indulgent brownie with a fudgy consistency, chewy corners and a crispy shell-like top. The type of brownie where you bite into it and your life is instantly improved. Now, I don’t want to over-sell this recipe so I’m going to be conservative and simply say, that these are… THE BEST BROWNIES IN THE WORLD. I know, big statement! But if you make them, then you’ll understand. This recipe is designed so it’s purposely easy to follow. It’s versatile and it’s perfect for any chocolate cravings you may […]
