Spirit animals give us strength, hope, love and comfort – they are all around us of we are open to seeing them! This spirit animal pottery sculpture project was such a fun project in our pottery camp last week! Kids really embraced the idea and ran with it!
We introduced students to the ceramic spirit guide sculptures of Florida artist Denise Ferragamo and talked about the meaning of spirit animals – or spirit guides – and had a great discussion about what everyone thought their spirit animal was. We were amazed at how different everyone’s ideas were!
We had horses and frogs and wo ..read more

Give us a if you hermies!
These adorable little hermit crabs were the ultimate summer crowd pleaser! They were so irresistibly creepy and cute at the same time, the kids just couldn’t help but love them!
This was a super simple instructed drawing – we drew them with white china marker, traced with glue (dry overnight) – then chalk pastel. We instructed kids on how to make the shell look round and cylindrical with highlights & shadows.

Any fans of Gray Malin’s beach birds eye view photography out there? These chalk pastel overhead beach scenes were such a whimsical and fun summer drawing prompt! Beach scenes are such a fan fave here in North Carolina because basically everyone goes to the beach in the summer!
They all know their beach geography & topography!
The finished pieces are such a perfect show of color and composition, they can be displayed in any direction and will hopefully always remind these little artists of #SUMMER22.

We’re excited to share this beautiful bird painting art project for kids inspired by artist Sanna Annukka.
We are in the midst of the most fabulous summer! Our 2nd “Pandemic Summer” – who would ever believe!? Is it weird to feel like this is all “normal” now?
Whenever we need a relaxing and easy project in between some more challenging creative undertakings, we find ourselves gravitating to a bird project of some sort. Drawing and painting birds seems to have such a relaxing and “re-setting” effect on kids. No one ever panics when we announce we’re drawing a bird!&nbs ..read more

Sometimes you have a moment where a bell just dings in your head and you go YES! Super cheesy pun, but that’s what really happened with these “Bell Bundles” – a super fun kids’ art project inspired by Earth Darlings Ceramics.
This is how it started: I was digging for something in my garage a few weeks ago and a package of little paper pulp seedling cups fell off a shelf. I literally can’t remember where they came from – whether a generous someone gave them to me when she moved to Santa Monica (Val??) or if I planned to start an herb garden one day when I finally become the ..read more

I was recently on the hunt for some new linens for our cabin when I discovered artist and designer Shell Rummel‘s line of dreamy textiles, and ended up lost for days down a deep rabbit hole. For some reason I found the natural colors and textures of her saltwater seaside inspired pieces to be exactly what was needed to balance some of the more rustic decor in our woodsy mountain retreat. I have to confess that my obsession has now expanded to her beautiful paintings, this specifically. Her art is peaceful and calm, fluid and tranquil. Getting lost in her wo ..read more

One of my favorite things to do during early quarantine/Covid days was to pack my family up and drive around Charlotte checking out all of the AMAZING murals around town. From Rock Hill to Noda- there is beautiful art all around us.
I was so excited when my friend (and fabulous photographer), Brooke Brown (Brooke Brown Photography) started visiting many of these murals and profiling the artists behind them on her Instagram feed. She first posted about local Charlotte artist and educational leader, Ricky Singh’s beautiful Sankofa bird mural on December 30 ..read more

Feast your eyes on this Election Day art project for kids in our special School’s Out Camp that day.
This project was loosely inspired by an artist we love, Lourdes Villagómez. That’s her original painting that inspired us!
These are the hands of powerful creators, chubby & small, but oh-so-capable. They are the hands of resilient kids who are learning to feel confident in speaking up and speaking out. Empower them.
To be empathetic & kind.
To be conscious & engaged.
To view the world with all of it’s problems & challenges as something they have the power to c ..read more
