What if there’s a place with no crying, mourning or pain?

Crying. Mourning. Pain. Though we desperately try to avoid them, we also accept them as a part of what it means to be alive. But what if life could be lived without them? What if a place existed where there was no crying, no mourning, no pain – would you want to go there? It may sound too good to be true, but if the idea of such a place causes you to sigh “if only…”, then the next questions must be: Does such a place actually exist? and if so, How do I gain access? Even the slightest possibility that such a place exists would make a thorough investigation worthy of significant if not your al ..read more

Are my sermons boring?
Communicate Jesus | Inspirational Christianity Blog

In recent months several people at different churches have told me how bored they are by the sermons they hear on Sundays. Now, if you’re a preacher, “bored” is a term likely to immediately trigger your defence mechanisms. You’ll likely want to jump at the comment and eagerly condemn such ungodly attitudes. And yes, when some people say “I find the sermons boring” they mean the sermons fail to entertain them. In this case repentance is required – there are many ways to be entertained but sermons aren’t one of them. No one should expect entertainment when God’s word is preached. However, this c ..read more

Pastors are soul-watchers
Communicate Jesus | Inspirational Christianity Blog

One day you and I will need to give an account to God (Luke 16:2, Hebrews 4:13, Romans 14:12).  But as Hebrews 13:17 makes clear, pastors also will need to give an account not only for themselves, but for the souls they were given to watch over: “Obey your leaders and submit to them, since they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.”  Pastors have been given the responsibility of soul-watching. It’s a serious undertaking – it is a difficult enough task to watch your ..read more

Free Resource for COVID-19 Pastoral Calls
Communicate Jesus | Inspirational Christianity Blog

In recent days a few friends have shared with me how much they would appreciate a phone call from their pastor at this time. They’ve received numerous emails from their church with links to tune in to live-streamed services or access a small group via Zoom – but they would love to have a personal conversation. It’s easy to prioritise larger ‘gatherings’ because it’s an efficient way to bring people together. But efficiency relates to speed, whereas effectiveness is about purpose. Effectiveness is marked not by how quickly a goal is completed, but how successfully a goal is achieved. Steven Cov ..read more

Pastors, there’s never been a better time to pick up the phone

A number of years ago, an older Christian man took on the role of coordinating men’s ministry at my church. What he did next was both a surprise and an unforgettable example. His time wasn’t consumed with organising men’s events, though these did occur. His priority, over the following 12 months, was to meet with as many of the men at church who would accept his invitation. He didn’t wait for them to ask or for a crisis to to prompt them to reach out. Instead, he wrote out a list of names and systematically pursued them. As a result of this, men felt cared for and listened to. Many had ne ..read more

Love does not demand refunds

If you have paid for an event or service that has now been cancelled, what will your next step be? Request (or demand) a refund, or Provide prayerful encouragement, acknowledging that these are difficult times and advise that your ticket can be kept as a donation. Christian, which of these will be your response? A friend works for an organisation that runs Christian conferences and events. Almost all of their funding to run the ministry and pay their employees comes from people attending events – and these have now been forced to shut down. Many jobs are on the line, and many potentia ..read more

Church – the friendliest place on earth?
Communicate Jesus | Inspirational Christianity Blog
by Steven Kryger

On a scale of 1-10, how friendly is your church? Here’s one way to think about it – if your next-door neighbour attended your church for the first time, how confident would you be that they would receive a warm welcome? And if they went on their own, without you there to introduce them to the people you know, how would that affect your ranking? Visitors to church will put up with a lot. Unreliable PowerPoint. Uncomfortable seats. Long sermons. Instant coffee. But few visitors will tolerate cold fellowship. It is a horrible feeling to walk away from church after few if any people ..read more

The Couch to 5K Model of Christian Discipleship

If you are not a runner you probably couldn’t wake up tomorrow and run 5 kilometres without stopping. You probably couldn’t run for 5 minutes! Most people need to work up to a goal of this size, building fitness and stamina over time until the impossible becomes possible. I wasn’t a runner (and I still wouldn’t describe myself as one!) but I learnt to run this way using the Couch to 5k app. Three times a week I would walk and run in alternating blocks. In the beginning, I did more walking than running. But over time I was running more and walking less until I was running for 30 minutes witho ..read more

Google reveals Australians want to know about Good Friday

Each year, Google reports on the top search terms in different countries around the world. Three years ago I shared the fascinating revelation that Jesus topped the list of searches for ‘who is…’ in Australia. It was clear that Australians wanted to know who Jesus is. Google’s latest report has just been released and one search in particular grabbed my attention. Why is it called Good Friday? comes in at #2 in the list of ‘Why is…?’ searches. Some fascinating implications for mission, as are the top ‘How to…?’ searches:  How to opt out of my health recordHow to watch World Cup in A ..read more

Becoming a Man: 11 Questions for Christian Men from Mark Batterson’s ‘Play the Man’

“I mean to make myself a man, and if I succeed in that, I shall succeed in everything else.” – James A. Garfield How do you become a man? Over the weekend I read Play the Man by Mark Batterson. It’s very easy to read and explores what a man of God looks like and provides guidance for fathers as they help their sons become men. Batterson helpfully shares how he sought to lead his sons in a  ‘Year of Discipleship’ with physical, spiritual and mental challenges. The year culminated in a rite of passage and as a father of two young sons, this book and these practices left me with a lot t ..read more
