The Technological Pivot of History: Power in the Age of Exponential Innovation
Foreign Policy Research Institute
by Natalia Kopytnik
2h ago
Just as Halford Mackinder, in his seminal work The Geographical Pivot of History, argued that control over the Eurasian heartland held the key to global mastery, the world stands at the precipice of another pivotal shift—one driven not by geography, but by the relentless force of exponential technological innovation. This is the age of the Technological Pivot of History, where the balance of power hinges not only on landmasses but also on the ability to harness and wield the ever-evolving arsenal of technological advancements. The pace of innovation today is nothing short of breathtaking. Moor ..read more

China’s Local Policymakers’ Strategic Adaptation to Political Centralization
Foreign Policy Research Institute
by Natalia Kopytnik

Introduction According to its Constitution, China is a unitary state; however, as part of economic reform in the 1980s and early 1990s, the central government delegated administrative authority to the provinces. Administrative delegation authorized local governments’ autonomy in governing and resulted in a de facto functional division between the central and local state.[1] In order to to align the interests of local state agents in this decentralized system with over thirty-three provincial-level regions, 334 prefecture-level divisions, 2,862 county-level divisions, 41,034 towns ..read more

Introduction Consider the following pieces of a puzzle. Russia’s war against Ukraine has revealed stories about the heroic resistance efforts of Ukrainian women[1]: from a grandmother launching a pickle jar against a drone[2] to volunteers with territorial defense units.[3] However, comparable stories have been entirely lacking on Russia’s side: How come? Here is another piece: the stories of rape and abuse in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories have shaken the world, with male Russian soldiers featured as systematic perpetrators of war crimes.[4] Were there any female soldiers or p ..read more

On Friday, March 22, an attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow killed or wounded hundreds of people. The assault was the deadliest act of terrorism in the Russian capital in more than a decade. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, and US officials have attributed it to the ISIS-K branch. Russian authorities have arrested four men suspected of carrying out the attack but continue to blame Ukraine for the tragedy. For a closer look at the emerging narratives and response to the attack, we offer you an FPRI expert commentary below: Nikolas K. Gvosdev We need ..read more

Orbis Editor’s Corner: Facing Future Challenges
Foreign Policy Research Institute
by Natalia Kopytnik

Since taking over the editorship of Orbis four years ago, I have wanted to keep the journal’s orientation faithful to the course laid out by the founding editor, Ambassador Robert Strausz-Hupé. He felt that covering geopolitical shifts and technological changes were absolutely crucial to understanding the direction of international affairs. As we approach seven decades of publication, these twin imperatives have not changed. In this issue, we go deep on one region of the world–Africa–to continue to assess changes in a continent whose importance to the future of US global engagement is not ..read more

China’s Two Meetings and What They Mean for the United States

On the first Monday in March 2024, delegates—nearly 3,000 to the National People’s Congress (NPC) and over 2,000 to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference—gathered in Beijing. With the exception of a handful of members of ethnic minorities in colorful costumes, the bright jackets of some of the very few female delegates and a phalanx of military officers who marched in en masse, the huge auditorium was a sea of navy blue suits. Delegates were served tea in identical cups by young women in identical red suits. A copy of the premier’s work report, the centerpiece of the NPC meeti ..read more
