Seven Days Vermont

In the wake of a presidential election that will send Donald Trump back to the White House, leaders of Vermont's most racially diverse school districts are taking steps to reassure students, parents and staff who are feeling anxious about the future. Trump’s campaign was rife with anti-immigrant rhetoric, and he has vowed to roll back the rights of transgender youth. Behind the Numbers: How Vermont Voters Shifted to the Right This Election
Seven Days Vermont
by Sasha Goldstein

Voters in Vermont shifted to the right in Tuesday's election, giving the GOP significant gains in the legislature and handing Donald Trump his best of three showings in the state. The trend extended to two popular incumbent members of Congress — U.S. Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) — both of whom won reelection, but by lower margins than in years' past. In the Statehouse, Republicans picked up 18 seats in the 150-member House, plus six more in the 30-member Senate. Business Is Booming for the Chittenden County Sheriff's Department
Seven Days Vermont
by Derek Brouwer

Nothing appeared amiss on the downtown Burlington street corner where Chittenden County Sheriff Dan Gamelin posted up one morning last week. Office workers trudged up an alley to an eight-story building at Bank and Pine streets. A few teens walked and biked toward the nearby Burlington High School. During this humdrum commute, Gamelin sat in his unmarked black Chevy Tahoe and watched the block come to life. That was fine by him. One of the businesses inside that tall office building, Goldman Sachs, was paying Gamelin to keep watch for four hours a day, Monday through Friday. Elsewhere in the ..read more
