Today I said farewell to the Pacific Ocean for the next 72 hours, making my way to Eugene, Oregon to attend the 2024 Spring Oregon Small Business Development Center Network’s Leaders Conference. But before I got to my hotel, I was able to sneak in one new disc golf course: Camp Serene, a little North of Noti, Oregon.
The definition of serene, according to Dictionary.com is “calm, peaceful, or tranquil.” And as I made my way around the property, which was a combination of open acres, wooded acres, a pond, a small stream and a river, I must say that I was feeling serene.

It’s been a rough few months. In regards to taking care of myself physically? It’s been a rough few years. I LOVE where I live, and I LOVE what I do! But since I moved to Oregon, I work W-A-Y too much. Which has made it all but impossible to enjoy one of the things that gives me joy in life: playing disc golf.
I would always tell people that with all my health issues, my life is a very delicate ecosystem. If I don’t balance the “right” amount of work, with the “right” amount of sleep, the “right” amount of time with family and friends, the “right” amount of exercise? My life winds up looking ..read more

After getting a taste of being back on the course collecting trail yesterday, and being within ten miles of five courses I hadn’t yet played in the Seattle, Washington area, I was a man on a mission this morning. My hope was to play at least one new eighteen-hole course before heading to WIBC to watch my daughter (Eleanor) perform, but I managed to have JUST enough time to play two new eighteen-hole courses! Although it didn’t come without its share of drama.

It has been weeks since I had the chance to disc golf. My health hasn’t been good, plus work has been keeping me incredibly busy of late. But today was the day my wife and I got to make the seven-hour drive North to Seattle, Washington, to watch our youngest daughter (Eleanor) participate in the Western International Band Clinic for the second (and final, since she is a senior in high school) time in two years. And NOTHING, not health, or rain, or ??? was keeping me from checking out a few new disc golf courses.

I made it back to Coos Bay this afternoon, but not before I snuck in one more new course on my way back from Sunriver!
View from the Hole 1 tee at Odell Lake Resort and Lodge in Crescent, Oregon.
I took a Southerly route home, so I could get the one Central Oregon course (South of Bend) that I hadn’t yet played: Odell Lake Resort and Lodge. I’ve looked at this course on two previous trips in the area, but had never been able to stop and throw a round. And given the perfect weather conditions, it seemed to be the ideal opportunity to add that “+1” to my courses played collection.

As quickly as it began, my 2023 SBDC Fall Directors Conference ended this afternoon. Roughly three days of great ideas and conversations with my counterparts from around the State of Oregon’s Small Business Development Center Network. I love those conferences…as they involve the only people in the State of Oregon who understand what is required to excel in my job. I’ve already shared 2-3 ideas I came across at the conference with my colleagues back in Coos Bay.

Today was a day I had circled on my calendar for the past few months. Driving over to Sunriver, Oregon to attend my SBDC Fall Directors Conference with the Directors from nineteen other Centers across the State of Oregon, as well as staff from our network headquarters. I always come away refreshed from those conferences, bringing new ideas and new information home with me! But it also gives me a chance to look at my map of unplayed courses in UDisc…seeing what opportunities there might be to add a few new courses to my collection.

This week, I needed to head to Nashville, to attend the ASBDC conference for work. With roughly 1,500 people in attendance, it was the largest conference I have attended in my career. A chance to rub elbows with my counterparts from every state in the country, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and even countries such as Chile and Columbia. I learned a lot! But of course, having the chance to be in a place 1,000+ miles from home, my eyes wandered onto my Unplayed Courses map on UDisc…to see if there might be anywhere I could quickly play while I was in town ..read more
