Also I’m not Jewish I’m very interest in Niddah. Just had a period and made sense not to touch my partner. I can see why now, literally women have raging thoughts during that time of the month. Makes sense. submitted by /u/crisdee26 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Those who stayed

I'm not sure what to call them, but I've been thinking about them a lot this year. The Jewish people who stayed in their countries despite repression, pogroms, hate. I think of it when I meet an Ashkenazi Jew from Europe-- their family stayed up until WW2 and even after. I think of it when I meet a Russian Jew or hear of Jewish people still in Iran. . Did they have a choice to leave and chose to stay? Did they think it would get better? My family never stayed, as far as I know. Things start to get bad, and they're out. Our history is a story of migrations and renewal. I feel that maybe this m ..read more

Why does Kosher for Passover Ben & Jerry's have different ingredients? (carrageenan)

I'm an american in Israel who misses american ice cream dearly, and also avoid foods with carrageenan added to them. I don't think its necessary, and has been linked to negative health effects. This passover, i noticed the B&J's ice creams in the store said happy holidays (chag sameach) and curiously didn't have carrageenan in their ingredient list. Now that pesach is over, the B&J's in the stores have carrageenan again. Upon a cursory google search, i discovered carrageenan is kosher for passover, its derived from seaweed. So if carrageenan is kosher for pesach, why did the passover ..read more

I’m Catholic but I don’t attend Church because of difference of opinions on certain things. I admire Judaism and its people, I am wondering what can I do to honor the Faith and the People? I know the Big 3 in the U.S. are Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform, so what can I do? All thoughts and suggestions are welcome. submitted by /u/Dustman818 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hebrew Engraved Wedding Bands?

Shalom! My future wife and I are getting married and we are incorporating many Jewish elements into our wedding. One that many of our friends recommended was engraving Song of Songs 6:3 on our bands in Hebrew. While I hear this is a common tradition, none of our married Jewish friends have gotten it done. I’ve been searching online for jewelers that do Hebrew engraving and I haven’t found any that look legit and won’t break the bank (>$1500). Where I got her engagement ring (Adiamor) doesn’t do Hebrew either. Does anyone have any advice on places to look? submitted by /u/baxterbrown [visi ..read more

I was reading about peace offerings in Leviticus and it got me wondering if this or any of the other sacrifices the anceient Jews performed were accompanied by prayer? If so, I'm curious to know what the content of these prayers might be (if they are set). submitted by /u/diyage [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Outside knowledge of Genesis and Exodus

Before the birth of "he who shall not be named" in the 1st century AD the five books of Moses already existed. How familiar were the polytheistic romans and Greeks with the stories in Genesis and Exodus? Was it common knowledge among non jews about the plagues of Egypt or how God created the earth in seven days or did the Jews mostly keep it to themselves? Today even non religious people (or followers of non-Abrahamic faiths) are familiar with teh stories of Gensis and Exodus. Were the Romans and Greeks knowledgable too? (Judaism automatically deletes posts with "he who shall not be named" in ..read more
