I don’t believe that religious people are generally happier

And if they do think so they are lying to themselves. The demographic who believes that they will go to Hell and be raped and tortured for all eternity if they have sex before marriage is not, and will never be, happier than atheists. Maybe because of the toxic positivity and the fact that they are taught to be stupid they think they are “happier”, but they are not. submitted by /u/uueru [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Gay teacher in Switzerland was fired for teaching (mandatory) sex education. Shocker: All the parents that complained were fundamentalist Christian or Muslim. School president belongs to political evangelical party. (Linked news article in German with automatic translation)

People who grew up non-religious…what was that like?

So I (22F) was raised in a heavily conservative Catholic family and community, and something that I was constantly told was that I was so lucky to be raised in a good Christian family and that all those poor non-religious kids were brainwashed by the world (ironic, I know). Well, I ended up leaving the faith not too long ago and now that I look back I realize Catholicism made my childhood weird as hell lol. Some fun highlights: * In third grade Sunday school, I was told that if a school shooter tells me to renounce Jesus, I should refuse and let myself be shot so that I can go straight to hea ..read more

Life begins at conception?

Several years ago I was raped. Next day took plan b pill. I was raised believing in God. Now I don't know. But I'm suffering a lot of extra trauma reading that I possibly aborted a baby because I may have "prevented implantation of an already fertilized egg". Christians say life begins at conception ie fertilization. If God and heaven exist, apparently if I aborted this rape baby, it is waiting to greet me in heaven. This idea is more traumatic than the rape itself. I don't want anything to do with any rape baby in the afterlife. If anyone can convince me I did not kill a fertilized egg, plea ..read more

These “churches” are multiplying in numbers.

As a veteran, and a recovering Christian, “churches” like this terrify me. The bastardization of religious beliefs and teachings to advance a political ideology (primarily ultra MAGA) is a recipe for… well, let’s just say it… a second civil war. Some people think it’ll never happen. It very well could. And liberals (atheists are usually clumped in with liberal for some reason, even though I’d venture to say most are moderates), will be targets. Sad, but true. Because “wokeness” is a threat to their superiority (or inferiority complex, whichever you prefer to use). Y’all, I’m legit scared. But ..read more

My dad said something the other day that was just so odd to me.

My dad is still very much a Christian and I very much am not. He's a licensed therapist and I was asking him for help in finding one for my wife and I since it's kind of a huge chore to find one. My dad is generally pretty good about our belief differences and even mentioned that it would be unethical for a therapist to evangelically mug (his words) clients. He went on to mention that "you need to be willing to think about things from different perspectives". me: Oh, I'm pretty used to doing that. I'm sure you have heard of a thing called deconstruction, right? dad: Yeah, I have heard of it a ..read more

Im currently reading “the god delusion” and its fantastic but I’m hungry for more. What books have been significant to you or others? Im willing to read history, philosophy, ethics and somewhat basic level mathematics and science, such as biology, neuroscience, geology, astronomy, ch ..read more
