Dilemma of a 21st Century American Taoist

This might be the closest to a 'rant' thread I've done since I discovered Taoism, but as it regards the struggles I have faced since beginning to walk the way, I would like to get it off my chest. Before I get into any problems, I would like to preface that I am not going to give up on the way over these issues, because these are issues everybody face, and are in fact exacerbated by things such as meaningless force and rigid dogma. The issue doesn't lie in the way itself, but what it has exposed about the society and individuals around me. To be clear, this post will be referring to my experi ..read more

How do I know if my chi/ Qi is blocked.

And if it were blocked how would I go about unblocking it, because I've been in a lot of pain lately, just unbearable pain that stuck around since 2018 in my chest. I've tried a little bit of tai chi but I'm hoping to get further into that and I'm also thinking of trying acupuncture which I hope works to bring me to a better mood and unblock my chi or do I just need to to heal from this pain becuase it has been bothering me for years now, since 2018. I did try some shadow work in the past and I believe it did help me, at least find the root cause of this pain but now I'm not sure. submitted ..read more

Is my view of Taoism wrong?

I view Taoism as a neighborhood pocket library, you know those give a book take a book boxes on the street corner in some neighborhoods. I feel those who participate should offer their opinions, as someone participating in Taoism you should be able to take any book you want. If you don’t like one of the books in the library, you shouldn’t have to take it. I believe Taoism was put on this earth to conform to the people not for the people to conform to it submitted by /u/happyfish111 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How to stop asking myself why life turned out the way it did.

So I'm not done reading the Tao Te Ching yet, and I'm lookin for a passage that can help me stop asking questions about why my life turned out this way. There's regret and frustration in the question as you can probably tell, and a need for an answer to soothe my brain, but there is none. At least none that my mind will accept. I can come up with things, but it's like I'm searching for the right answer. Every now and again I get the question pop up and frustration builds. I try to sit with the feelings and they go away after some time, but I wonder if there is a way to stop my brain from aski ..read more

I've been thinking about the Tao Te Ching recently, along with other Taoist wisdom. Specifically because I'm realizing how normal it is for some people to be dead set on making their lives dysfunctional and complicated.

It reminds of a quote that isn't necessarily Taoist in origin where a spiritual teacher tells his students "you can take away anything from a man and he'll come to accept it, but never try to take away his suffering. For that he'll fight with claw and tooth" It seems like a pretty absurd observation of human behavior, but I find it concerningly consistent with reality. A lot of people seem almost addicted to dysfunction. Simplicity and harmony is an offense to them. There's a number of theories about how we got that way, but these days I've been learning to actually live with a taostic perspe ..read more

I’m looking to reread the DDJ, but I keep finding english translations that are… rather inspired. I’ve even found a couple that rhyme, which feels weird at best Would anyone have a recommendation of an english version that’s as close to a literal translation as possible? I’d like to interpret what I can myself and not through the translator(to the extent that that’s possible) submitted by /u/Chris-Wise [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Tao and Ecology

I understand that we can not understand the inmensive cosmos, we can control it, also, we cannot control ourselves and looking for a meaning is not the objetive of taoism. We can go against Tao. But, as humans, a live form on this planet, we can understand the ecosistems that we´re part of, so, it´s our responsability to learn how to flow with the nature, respect it and take care of it. People before me said it, be ecologist is not to "save the nature", nature and live can exist without humans; be ecologist is more to survive and co-exist in this wonderfull world. In this stage of my life, I ..read more
