I’m nearing the finish line on a bedroom makeover, I’m turning my daughter’s bedroom into a cozy guest room for her to inhabit when she’s home from school but also as a respite for visiting family. It’s a cozy neutral space with touches of soft pinks and taupe hues, I look forward to sharing that space in a week or so. But first I’m headed to the KBIS trade show in Las Vegas to get up to date on all the new products and tech in the design industry. I’m looking forward to seeing what all the brands are showcasing, I’m sure it will inspire new ideas for remodeling projects in the future. If you ..read more

This week I hit the fifteen year mark for this blog. I launched it in February 2009 to document our home expansion and I just kept writing all this time! Thanks so much to all of you who’ve stayed around to follow my projects and adventures, I appreciate you all so much. I gave myself a week away from content creation to celebrate! Hence the silence this week. :) I spent much of my time clocking hours for my Florida real estate license course. The goal is to spend a the next few years renovating and renting properties in that state, so I decided it would be helpful to our real estate endeavors ..read more

Yesterday’s artisan market was a big success, it was a beautiful blue sky day that brought a crowd. I’m so pleased! It’s bittersweet to be saying goodbye to this space that I leased for a year but it taught me valuable lessons on how to run a retail shop and I met so many wonderful people during the experience. I have to say goodbye to my lovely space in March so I can start a new chapter. We’re looking forward to spending more time this year in Florida and we’re still looking for a cute little property to fix up and turn into a beach rental. It’s Superbowl Sunday so being a lifetime Bay Area ..read more

Oh how destinations inspire me, whether I’m present at a new and unique place or dreaming from browsing online. I adore eating and drinking establishments that use tile in a dramatic way, I pin all the ideas for future renovations and bookmark them to refer back to them if renovating a kitchen, bathroom, or outdoor space. I got lost online once more researching some beautiful tile installations from boutique cafes and resort restaurants around the world. Below I’ve featured ten alluring designs that might inspire you too, the images are paired with my brief takeaway.   1. Install earth to ..read more

There’s a big storm happening where I’m at so I’m spending more time indoors, but thankfully I have my ceramics studio to escape too. I’m spending extra time throwing clay on the wheel this month to improve my skills. My studio has a great big barn door that we open to get fresh air, it’s next to a plant nursery and I find it so meditative to sculpt clay while being so close to nature. I’m in the midst of prepping for another artisan market hosted by the building where I have my local shop. I’ll be ending my lease at the end of March in anticipation of a move to Florida this summer, so if you ..read more

Channel Tufted Banquettes
Centsational Style

I’m on the hunt for a new headboard for my daughter’s room turned part time guest room while she’s away at school. I’m drawn to the channel tufted versions in pretty colors but then I fell down the rabbit hole of channel tufted everything and discovered so many lovely banquettes that were equally inspiring. I have no space in my home for a banquette but I love this look so much, perhaps someday I’ll have an opportunity to install one in a different home. Are you one of those people that prefers a booth to a chair when dining out? I always scour a restaurant or cafe for a booth to sit in instea ..read more

The sun finally popped out to show itself this week so I took a half day to getaway to the coast to enjoy the vitamin sea. What a lovely day spent with friends sticking my toes in the sand. This week I’m adding final touches to a new series of art prints that will be available in my online shop, stay tuned for those botanical beauties. I decided to not renew my lease at my local shop since I’ll be back and forth between California and Florida this year, and it’s too much on my plate to manage. Instead I’m focused on buying another small home in Sarasota and spending the summer fixing it up. If ..read more

DIY Alcohol Ink Trays
Centsational Style

I like to dabble in different art mediums and alcohol ink is my latest experiment. I’m delighted to share that I created these lovely trays for holding small items. The size I chose works well with jewelry but you could also use these to corral beauty products. I really love the way alcohol ink spreads in an abstract way combining with neighboring inks to form new colors or will pool together to make eye catching swirls.   The supplies for this project are simple, I used these white trays and bought a few alcohol inks both online and at Michaels (that store has a great selection). You’ll ..read more

Elements of Wabi Sabi Style
Centsational Style
by Kate Riley
1M ago
The term ‘wabi sabi’ has no direct English translation, rather it’s a Japanese aesthetic rooted in tradition. The word ‘wabi’ refers to harmony and tranquility while ‘sabi’ loosely translates to beauty achieved over time. The design philosophy reflects nature’s colors and textures and honors the beauty of imperfection. Modesty, simplicity, and handmade are prioritized, whereas anything excessive, artificial, or saturated in hue is avoided. Wabi sabi is aligned with sustainability in its principles to reuse, recycle, or repair instead of replace. The design style shares the comfort of hygge wit ..read more
