Pace yourself this Supreme Court season, folks, as we head into oral argument for two major abortion rights cases before the term ends. First up on Tuesday is FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, which will decide the fate of mifepristone, one of two drugs used in medication abortions.
Not only could a ruling before the end of the Court term wipe out access, conservatives are using the case to resurrect the Comstock Act to eventually outlaw “obscene” things like contraception in the United States.

Leslie Ortiz, 24, has many of the same responsibilities as plenty of other college students: She’s double majoring in molecular cell biology and physiology and minoring in chemistry at California State University Long Beach while juggling part-time jobs as a vet assistant and receptionist. But Ortiz has another major responsibility: She’s the mother of a 4-year-old boy.
Children can be a beautiful addition to life, as Ortiz can attest, but they also unequivocally and irreversibly change the course of your life.
Not everyone feels ready, at 20, to be a parent; women 24 and younger make up almos ..read more

Next week, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, the first abortion case to land before the justices since the conservative bench overturned Roe v. Wade. It’s also the first case to test the viability of the Comstock Act to ban abortion nationwide. And while much of the media attention surrounding the Court has focused on Justice Clarence Thomas and his myriad of ethics problems, the real main character in next week’s medication abortion case is Justice Samuel Alito.

By G. Samantha Rosenthal, Associate Professor of History, Roanoke College
In the past century, there have been three waves of opposition to transgender health care.
In 1933, when the Nazis rose to power, they cracked down on transgender medical research and clinical practice in Europe. In 1979, a research report critical of transgender medicine led to the closure ..read more

This week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling in Deanda v. Becerra, which challenges teens’ ability to access birth control without parental consent. The Fifth Circuit, unsurprisingly, ruled in favor of Deanda, upending four decades of federal precedent.
Jess and Imani break down the appeals court’s decision and why the ruling is a ticking time bomb for Title X in other states, too.

The Alabama Supreme Court decision declaring in vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos “people” under the law hard launched the concept of “fetal personhood” to much of the American public and underscored what abortion rights advocates had warned for decades: The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will affect much more than just the right to abortion.
The immediate fallout from the Alabama Supreme Court decision spawned a flurry of media coverage focused on conservative extremism, so much so that the Alabama legislature rushed through ..read more

Every day, abortion providers across the country take a deep breath, unlock the clinic door, and begin their day. They know that patients who need their time, care, compassion, and medical expertise are about to walk through their doors.
And they also know protesters will flood their sidewalks, harass their patients and colleagues, and sometimes even attempt to block or breach their doors. They will face the day not knowing if the internet service provider will come to repair their Wi-Fi once they see the crowd of protesters outside, or whether the police will help patients enter the clinic sa ..read more

We are just a few short weeks out from oral arguments in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine—the Supreme Court case that could resurrect the Comstock Act and severely curtail access to medication abortion in this country—and conservative lawmakers have made their position on the case very clear. Not only does the Comstock Act prohibit telehealth and shipping pills for medication abortion, even in states where the practice is legal, but it prohibits shipping anything related to abortion and contraception.

It’s getting much harder to get gender-affirming care in the United States. To date, nearly half of states have banned gender-affirming care for people under 18 (though several of these bans are temporarily blocked). Despite lawmakers’ claims they want to “protect” children, some of these laws also affect care for adults, and an increasing number of new bills target adults directly.
All this hostility, combined with targeted threats and harassment, has led clinics to shut down. Some gender-affirming care providers have even left the field entirely.
But even before far-right politicians and hat ..read more
