Weekly Market Outlook – So Good It’s Bad?

Two weeks ago the rally was starting to show some cracks. They were all repaired last week… and then some. Indeed, stocks logged a major gain during the holiday-shortened week, ending at record highs above important technical ceilings. The unlikely move leaves traders wondering what’s next — is there actually room for more upside? There may well be. On the flipside, there’s one largely-overlooked reason to at least consider the possibility that the market’s near a major peak. We’ll look at that reason in some detail in a moment. Let’s first look at last week’s most important economic reports a ..read more

Weekly Market Outlook – Despite Last Week’s Gain, More Red Flags Are Waving
Bigtrends

More often not, how something happened is at least as important as what happened. It’s certainly true of the stock market anyway. Sometimes it’s the subtle, nuanced clues that give you a better hint of what’s really going on. It’s a concept to consider after last week’s action to be sure. While the major indices basically broke even (the NASDAQ logged a small gain while the S&P 500 suffered a small loss), the bulls’ best chance at extending the rally buckled in a big way when push came to shove. We’ll show you how and why in a moment. Let’s first run through last week’s biggest economic an ..read more

Weekly Market Outlook – Technical Resistance Remains in the Way
Bigtrends

Stocks managed to log another win last week… albeit just barely. And not all of them. Whereas the S&P 500 mustered a 0.6% gain during the holiday-interrupted stretch, the NASDAQ suffered the tiniest of weekly losses. Traders were moving to safer names, however. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.45% for the week. Unlike either other index though, the Dow didn’t make a new record high en route to the weekly gain. Whatever the case, the lethargy comes as no real surprise. Not only are stocks simply overextended right now, in most cases we’re still dealing with significant technical re ..read more

Weekly Market Outlook – The Bulls Need to Learn a Thing or Two About Pacing

Following through on the prior week’s rebound gains, stocks logged another win last week to end the five-day stretch at (or at least near) record highs. The S&P 500 was up 1.6%, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite rallied an impressive 3.2%, breaking above a key resistance level in the process. But, another technical ceiling is now in play, and the index is vulnerable to profit-taking thanks to its recent oversized gains. And that’s not the only red flag. Then again, we also have to acknowledge the market’s gotten very good at defying the odds of late. We’ll look at the risks to this ral ..read more

Weekly Market Outlook – The Bulls Push Back… Some of Them, Anyway
Bigtrends

The market bounced back from the previous week’s stumble last week, reaching record-high territory as a result. The bigger trend remains bullish. There are challenges, however. The NASDAQ Composite is bumping into an important technical ceiling, while the S&P 500’s rally is unfurling on weakening volume. There’s room and reason to doubt this advance has staying power. Still, the trend is your friend… We’ll look at the matter in some detail in a moment. Let’s first run through last week’s most important economic reports, which ended with a (mostly) encouraging jobs report for May. Economic ..read more

Weekly Market Outlook – Dented, But Not Derailed
Bigtrends

Stocks finished the week (and the month) on something of a high note, bouncing back from Friday’s intraday tumble to at least break even. Nevertheless, the holiday-shortened week was the first loser in the last six of them, making good on last Thursday’s red flag… the outside-day bearish reversal. It’s still too soon to presume the worst. As was already noted, the market finished the week on a bullish foot. Friday’s action is a telling day since it better indicates what traders are truly thinking, since they’re stuck with — or without — these trades until the following Monday. In this instance ..read more
