In a world where the majority still clings to some form of religious belief, being an atheist can sometimes feel like being a crypto bro in business school – slightly awkward, very challenging, and sometimes downright scary. Atheism, often misunderstood and sometimes maligned, presents unique challenges and opportunities, especially in societies where religion plays a central role. Let's explore what it means to navigate the world as an atheist in a predominantly religious society.
Understanding Atheism in a Religious Context
First, it's crucial to understand what atheism is – and what it isn ..read more

In the grand tapestry of human history, atheism, often seen as a modern phenomenon, has roots that run deep. Throughout the centuries, several notable figures have challenged the religious status quo, paving the way for a more secular understanding of the world. Let's embark on a journey through time to meet the top 10 influential atheists who've shaped our understanding of atheism and left an indelible mark on history.
1. Epicurus (341–270 BCE)
Starting our list is none other than the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus. While not an atheist in the modern sense, his ideas laid the groundwork f ..read more

Which came first, the gods or the lack of belief? Just how far does atheism go back? There's really no way to know which human in history was the first to live without belief in deities, but that's not going to stop us from glancing back at atheism throughout human history. It all started back with the Flintstones.
1. The Ancient "Wait, What Are Gods?" Era
Back in the really old days (and I mean, 'writing on cave walls was the new Twitter' old), humans were just figuring out fire and the wheel. Amidst all this, a few brave souls were probably too busy surviving to even think about deities. Ath ..read more

This is the story of a former candidate for mayor of Toronto, her descent down the QAnon rabbit hole, and how she has since taken up with some shady characters known for extremism. We'll see how QAnoners are plotting to take over small constituencies across Canada in an attempt to win enough power to influence policy. She is now the in-house lawyer for The United People of Canada, or TUPOC, and works closely with known conspiracy theorists like Colin "Big Bear" Ross. This is an episode of the Q-Dropped Podcast that hit very close to home and should be listened to by every single Canadian who h ..read more

I don’t really care what Richard Dawkins says. I know this might shock you that I, as an atheist, do not worship the ground Dicky Doc walks on, but I do not. I never did. Even back in the days when I enjoyed his tweets and read his books and found value in them, I couldn’t have worshipped him if I tried. This fact doesn’t do anything to stop the hateful trolls online from presenting things that were uttered by Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Ricky Gervais, Christopher Hitchens, and more, as though they apply to me simply because we share a position on the existence of gods.
Of course, what these ..read more

Jordan’s brother was convinced the United States was under attack. His whole family humoured his brother as he plotted to take them to Israel on a boat to escape this fate. They figured that when the attack didn’t happen, Jordan’s brother would realize he was wrong. That didn’t happen. What happened instead is like a twist from an M. Knight Shyamalan movie.

I thought my cousin was being murdered. The way he screamed as the man handled him still haunts me all these years later. I was maybe 6 or 7, and I had no idea what was going on. I was sitting on a cold, hard bench in a dimly lit building with ornately stained glass windows and impossibly high ceilings. When I looked up at the wall, I saw the bloodied carcass of a man who’d clearly been tortured. I can still feel the shockwaves that ripped through my body when I noticed it. That had been the first time I’d ever seen a dead human being. I turned to look away and was met with the sight of anothe ..read more

I have been looking for so long for a positive story with a great ending that gives my podcast listeners hope for their QAnon loved ones. I am so grateful that I finally found Stephanie who used to be lodged firmly down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole. She was a 9/11 truther, and she believed horrific events like the Sandy Hook school shooting were false flags and no one actually died.
In my interview with her, we hear how she changed her mind and pulled herself out of the rabbit hole. Listen ad-free on Patreon here or watch here:

I met Elaine after I gave my talk in Calgary. She’d come to hear what I had to say and afterward, she told me her family’s story. When I heard what she had to say, I knew I needed to have her on the podcast. Elaine and her sister Emma join me to talk about why their parents haven’t met their granddaughter and why they had to go to Mexico to experience, “real clouds.’
Also, be sure to watch me tell my family’s story at the We Can Reason Conference in Calgary here.
