Thunbs Down For Alvarez
NY Sports Day
by Lloyd Carroll

It is safe to say the Mets public address team will not be playing the 1966 Rolling Stones tongue-in-cheek misogynistic classic, “Under My Thumb.” It’s not the lyrics per se which are bothersome, but rather, it is a reminder of the type of injury which has bedeviled the Mets in recent years. Two weeks ago, catcher Francisco Alvarez broke his thumb when he lost his balance rounding first base on a double and landed hard on his thumb in a game with the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Alvarez underwent surgery two days later. He is not expected to return to the Mets lineup until early July at the earlies ..read more

Rangers Bottle Caps in 4-Game Sweep
NY Sports Day
by Howie Karpin

Take out the brooms, Rangers are movin’ on. Artemi Panarin snapped a 2-2 tie with a power play goal early in the third period and the Rangers went on to a 4-2 win at Capital One arena to complete a four game sweep of the Washington Capitals in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. “Winning playoff series in general is a difficult thing to do and to close a team out in four is even tougher,” Vincent Trocheck said. “I think the fourth win’s always the hardest. I just think that is says we’re a good hockey team.” The Rangers left no doubt as to who was the superior team and the numbers bac ..read more

Another Win: NYCFC Building Momentum
NY Sports Day
by Rich Mancuso
3d ago
This season, NYCFC has reached that point of momentum after their 2-1 win over Charlotte FC Saturday evening at Yankee Stadium. Yes, this is momentum for the Boys in Blue and three more points in the MLS eastern conference standings. This was their third consecutive win and fifth consecutive match undefeated. During this winning streak NYCFC has totaled 11 points, eight goals and three conceded. It’s their longest winning streak since a five match span from September 17 to October 23, 2022. So there is momentum now. Coach Nick Cushing has stated numerous times, in no specific order, his young ..read more

Jets’ Draft Has All The Signs Of A Winner
NY Sports Day
by Jeff Moeller
4d ago
Call the Jets’ initial draft a winner.   With the impending pressures of having him in the playoffs this season, GM Joe Douglas apparently stacked the deck further.    This can be a draft that decides the future of Dougals and head coach Robert Saleh beyond this eason.   Through the first five rounds, the Jets filled some needs and they reinforced some others. In the opening round, they didn’t go for the secy pick, but they chose the more conventional pick.   As draft day approached, the prevailing thoughts had the Jets taking Georgia tight end Brock Bowers with their ..read more

For Starters, Yanks Need to Push Theirs When the Opportunity Presents Itself

Yankee Manager Aaron Boone is taking some heat for last night’s 7-6, 11 inning loss to the Brewers in Milwaukee. Managers get criticized all the time, it comes with the territory, but last night that criticism was justified. With the game tied at five in the ninth, Boone elected to use closer Clay Holmes who threw only 10 pitches to retire the side in order. The Yankees scored a run in the top of the 10th to take a 6-5 lead, but, for some reason, Boone elected not to use Holmes (not a second guess) to lock down the win but instead opted for Michael Tonkin, who was essentially released three ti ..read more

It Was a Start for J.D. Martinez
NY Sports Day
by Rich Mancuso
4d ago
All along the Mets had their eyes on J.D. Martinez and his debut in the lineup. The six-time All-Star with a career 315 home runs was a late spring training signee but was put on hold with lower back stiffness. The Mets hope a power surge behind Pete Alonso would increase their ability to score runs. Friday night at Citi Field, Martinez received a nice ovation from another slim crowd, and it was the moment his team and Mets fans anticipated. Martinez, signed to a one-year contract, was never considered a savior to a lineup that has been inconsistent in the early going of April baseball. But th ..read more

Miracle on 33rd Street

Maybe Warden Samuel Norton said it best in “The Shawshank Redemption” when he saw Andy Dufresne’s cell was empty and uttered the phrase, “Lord, it’s a miracle.” The Knicks pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in their playoff history as they scored the last 8 points of the game in the final 27 seconds to stun the Philadelphia 76ers with an incredible 104-101 win in game two of their first round series at a frenzied Madison Square Garden last night. The World’s Most Famous Arena shook like it felt the earthquake that hit the tri-state area 17 days ago. “There’s been some pretty wild finishe ..read more

Knicks’ Hustle and Depth Shines as Sixers Miss Game 1 Opportunity
NY Sports Day
by Jon Wagner
1w ago
The Philadelphia 76ers’ best chance to get past the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs is probably to force other Knicks besides New York’s top star Jalen Brunson to try to beat them. If Brunson is leading the way (as he usually does) with other Knicks chipping in, it will likely be a short series. However, if Brunson is mostly kept in check as he was during the Game 1 meeting between New York and Philadelphia at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening, the seventh-seeded 76ers may still have a decent prospect of pulling off a series upset over the seco ..read more

Slam Francisco, Lindor HR Powers Mets Past Dodgers
NY Sports Day
by Howie Karpin

Francisco Lindor could not have picked a better time to get his first extra base hit as a left-handed batter. Lindor snapped a 4-4 tie with a huge, two run home run in the seventh inning as the Mets scored a 9-4 win over the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium Friday night for their fifth consecutive win. The Mets have won 11 of 14 since their 0-5 start. They also have five wins in their last six games at Chavez Ravine and are now 5-2 on the road. This game would not qualify for web gems as the teams combined for five errors and it was a throwing error by Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts that helped set u ..read more

Mets are Real Before Thin Crowds
NY Sports Day
by Rich Mancuso
2w ago
Apparently, Mets fans are not believing in this team. The Mets completed 5-1 homestand at Citi Field before thin crowds that was capped Wednesday afternoon with a 9-1 win and a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Also taking two-of-three from the vastly improved Kansas City Royals shows their resilience and an ability to come from behind. Perhaps a Mets 9-1 win will carry over with a six-game road swing against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. Visits to the West Coast have been notorious over the years for killing any early season momentum the Mets may have had at the ..read more
