It was a freezing morning. The snow in a small clearing in the middle of the forest crunched under my feet. Suddenly, I lifted off the ground and slowly began to gain altitude. The rays of the rising sun, which only a moment before had been shyly making their way through the branches of the dense young spruce trees, suddenly hit me in all their fresh golden glory. I gained altitude, and above the crowns of the towering spruces I made my way over the snow-covered meadow, from which the rising sun was just stripping the shadows of the trees like a sort of frayed blue tablecloth. I was enjoying t ..read more

It’s not even a quarter of a century since Nikon launched the FM3a. At the time, Nikon was already producing feature-packed models such as the F5 and F100. Nevertheless, I’m going to use the former manual classic FM3a as a springboard for my futuristic visions. There are two reasons for this. The personal one is that I entered the Nikon waters with the FM3a. But more importantly, this camera had just two basic functions: shutter speed and ISO ..read more

Grab a bird field guide and flip through its pages quickly – so fast that you can feel a breeze against your face. As the pages flicker before your eyes like a cartoon, the flashes of colors will tell stories of evolution. These usually have two basic storylines. The color of a bird’s feathers either tells us something about the nature of the bird’s environment or about the sexual preferences of picky females. Occasionally, however, there are individuals whose coloration does not fit into either of these schemes, and those are the ones I’d like to talk about today ..read more

OM SYSTEM has just announced a new camera: the OM-3. Unlike the OM-1 and OM-1 Mark II, the OM-3 is a very different beast with a retro design. Even so, it’s still got a stacked sensor and shares many capabilities with the OM-I Mark II. And together with this new camera, OM SYSTEM has also announced updates to its M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8, 25mm f/1.8, and 100-400mm f/5-6.3 lenses. What an incredibly busy week in the photography world ..read more

In photography, having a vision and a concrete plan is always helpful. But getting too attached to your initial ideas can prevent you from seeing good subjects in front of you, especially when they are entirely different from what you had in mind ..read more

On Thursday, while searching through my archives for some photos for an upcoming article, I came across a series of images that brought back memories of wonderful moments spent in nature. This time it was Costa Rica. One photo in particular made me smile again after all these years—a shot of a Frigatebird, the feared pirate of the tropical seas, fleeing from a small songbird, the Tropical Kingbird. It reminded me a bit of the old story of David and Goliath ..read more

Do you know what the Nikon D5, D6, Z8 and Z9 have in common? Yes, you’re right, these are the most advanced models from Nikon since 2016, placing speed above all else. And, I’m not talking about the speed of the autofocus or the continuous shooting, but the speed at which you can change the camera’s settings when the shooting conditions change. You can do this with the inconspicuous Recall Shooting Function, which has huge potential for unpredictable photography scenarios ..read more
