2024--Is the stock market overvauled?
Dividend Growth Forum

With a few DGI members moving to a larger cash position, and quite a few comments mentioning that the market is overvauled. It made me begin to wonder? Is the market overvauled? Are we due for a market correction? A recession? Or something worse? I would say aside from something horrible happening "Or something worse?" can be removed from the thought of "What's going to happen?" What do we know? Inflation came down and is now kind of stuck in place--so it's sticky, the consumer is not happy but is not panicking, the housing market is not great--why would it be?? Lot's of people hav ..read more

JNJ / KVUE Decision?!
Dividend Growth Forum
by

Is anybody planning to exchange any of their JNJ for some KVUE? Honestly, I've been googling a while and have yet to find a simple, clear explanation of the split-off and the dynamics behind an investor's decision to participate. Anybody want to weigh in? For starters, if it were a spin-off, we'd keep all of our JNJ shares and just also get shares in the new company. The value of the JNJ shares would decline, as it loses a large segment of revenues. But you get that same segment of revenues in the new company, so the value proposition rests on whether there are reasons each company might do ..read more

Article on yahoo not-so-kind to dividend investing

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ask-advis...32909.html The middle section caught my eye: Since we haven’t met, I’m not sure how much you’ve scrutinized the idea of dividend investing for retirement income. You may have researched it thoroughly and are perfectly comfortable with this strategy. If you haven’t, it’s important to point out some of the common misunderstandings of dividend investing. To be clear, I do not encourage retirees to rely on dividends due to several shortcomings: Dividends aren’t anything extra. They are an integral part of a stock’s total return. Spending ..read more

MLB 2023 season

I haven't been following the Red Sox much this year.  I will explain. It all started in 2018, our World Series year with such an amazing team.  But Chris Sale was toast by the end of the season, yet inexplicably despite all the evidence suggesting his arm was about to fall off, they gave him a huge contract extension.  This was to lay the groundwork for all the problems to come. Next, the Sox let Mookie Betts go because they couldn't afford him.  That was awful.  Still, they said that by doing this, they'd be able to hold onto other stars like Xander Bogaerts ..read more

DGF in Google's AI Model

Washington Post has an interesting article today digging into the data sets that various AI models are trained on. It includes a tool that lets you type in any web address and see if it is included in one of Google's big sets ("C4"). Of websites that begin with the words "dividendgrowth..." we're the second highest rank, with 150k "tokens," whatever that means:   Screenshot 2023-04-19 at 12.25.11 PM.png (Size: 262.61 KB / Downloads: 1) Eric's website is in there too, with 40k tokens. I guess this is not really surprising, but still ..read more

Bear market?  What bear market? MCD is up from $167 to $270 in the past 5 years, in a pretty straight line up as far as stocks go.  You want annual dividend increases?  Let's see... 2018 - $1.01 2019 - $1.16 2020 - $1.25 2021 - $1.29 2022 - $1.38 2023 - $1.52 The P/E is high (~38), but other than that, seems like a model citizen of DGI land ..read more

ZIM shipping
Dividend Growth Forum

Hello everyone, I need your advice.  As I type this, ZIM sits at $23.325, and my purchase price is $23.0529, so I'm up a teensy weensy bit.  The company is paying out its last great dividend of $6.40 per share soon.  However, due to Israeli tax, the net dividend is only $4.80.  However, I would expect the share price to drop the full $6.40 after it goes ex-div.  The reason I say "last great dividend" is because for the last year, ZIM has paid out monster dividends.  Now with shipping prices falling and the oncoming recession, it's quite likely that after the stoc ..read more
