You may think that being a boss is only one job, but it’s really two. One is to accomplish the mission through the team. That’s the one most people are aware of. The other job is less recognized, but it’s important to your short term and long-term success. Your job is to help your team members succeed. That means you should help them succeed in the job they have now, and it means you should help them succeed in their career. And, just to make it fun, you must consider both today and tomorrow. Juggling all those things will make your days challenging. This is only one insight from my ebook, Bec ..read more

Boss’s Tip of the Week: Look for the pony
Three Star Leadership Blog By Wally Bock

When bad stuff happens, remember the story of the two boys whom researchers placed in a room full of horse manure. One became depressed and inert. The other began exuberantly working his way through the manure, laughing and shrieking: “There’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!” When bad stuff happens to you, you can ponder the awful unfairness of it all or you can start looking for the pony. In real life, there’s always a pony of opportunity in the pile somewhere. Fortune favors those who look for the pony. This is only one of 347 tips in my ebook, Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time. Book Review: Do Hard Things
Three Star Leadership Blog By Wally Bock

I named Peak Performance as one of the top books I read in 2018. Steve Magness co-authored that book, so I expected any book he produced to be high quality. That’s one reason that I bought Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness. The title intrigued me, too. Gertrude Stein once said of Oakland, “There is no there there.” You could say something similar about this book. There’s no book there. There’s lots of good content. The problem is that all that content does not seem to be rowing in the same direction. You can get value from individual piec ..read more

Boss’s Tip of the Week: Preview books you want to read

Back when we bought most of our business books in stores, that’s where a lot of us would be on Saturday morning, taking the time to look through books that interested us, to see if we wanted to buy them. Today, you can do the same thing without leaving home. Preview books on Amazon or Barnes and Noble by looking inside the book. Check the table of contents and look at some pages. If you’ve got a Kindle or Nook, download the free sample. And don’t forget the reviews. Many summarize a book’s contents superbly. Bonus: You’ll learn a lot from the samples and reviews. This is only one of 347 tips ..read more

Boss’s Tip of the Week: Don’t make it a contest
Three Star Leadership Blog By Wally Bock

It’s easy to slip into the belief that because you’re the boss, you’re the one who should be right all the time. Thinking that way can turn problem-solving conversations into contests where you strive to come out on top. Don’t do that. Gather opinions and data from everyone, discuss the options. Make your conversation a collaboration, not a contest. This is only one of 347 tips in my ebook, Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time. Just promoted from individual contributor? Socratic Oath

When I was a teenager, one of the things I most wanted to do was paw through the Playboy magazines that my father kept under lock and key in his study. Dad said he had the magazines for the articles. I was interested in the pictures. Dad made me a deal. He would give me free run of his Playboys on one condition. I had to read a book of Plato’s Dialogues and discuss what I read with him. I don’t recall a single picture from those magazines. But the Dialogues had a powerful effect on me. I learned that most discussions start with unexamined assumptions. Discovering what those are is the powerfu ..read more

Boss’s Tip of the Week: Pay Attention to What You Pay Attention To
Three Star Leadership Blog By Wally Bock

What you pay attention to is important. At least that’s what your team members think, and it gives them clues about how to act. If you reward performance, they will strive to perform better. If you praise effort, they will work harder. If you brush off their ideas so you can talk about office politics, they will stop bringing you their ideas and start analyzing their actions for the political implications. What you pay attention to sends a powerful message. Pay attention to what you pay attention to. This is only one of 347 tips in my ebook, Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time. Boss’s Tip of the Week: Take Breaks
Three Star Leadership Blog By Wally Bock
by Wally Bock

Breaks help you stay fresh and deliver more of your highest quality work. They help you keep your mental balance. Dr. Ernest Lawrence Rossi, who studies what are called “ultradian rhythms”, found that human beings naturally fall into a pattern of needing a break after 90 to 120 minutes of work. Rossi recommends a break of 15 to 20 minutes before beginning the next work period. What’s a break? Something different. If you’ve been working on a project, do some filing or answer emails. Take a short walk. Chat with a friend. Read. Something different. This is only one of 347 tips in my ebook, Beco ..read more
