All eyes were on the reigning World Champion Paul O’Donovan, racing for the first time in the heavyweight single scull category while his lightweight doubles partner, Fintan McCarthy, recovers from illness. In typical O’Donovan fashion, Paul stayed comfortably within the pack for the first half of the race and gradually built up speed coming towards the 2000m mark. Crossing the line in 3rd place, Paul will race in the repechage tomorrow, where a place for two crews in the A/B semi-final is up for grabs. Weekend Round-up – Limerick and Schools Regatta

Limerick Regatta and the Irish Schools Regatta took place last weekend at O’Briensbridge. The six Limerick clubs hosted 32 clubs and 52 schools over two days, delivering over 200 races in glorious sunshine. Many of the young rowers got their first taste of regatta rowing on Saturday, with huge cheers of support for the U13 Octuplets, giving us some fantastic races along with the U14 quads too. Limerick Regatta Committee will host both the Limerick Regatta and the Schools Regatta this weekend at O’Briensbridge, Co. Clare. The regatta committee wants to make attendees aware that there is very limited parking available at the venue and in the local area. Spectators and athletes are advised to carpool and to get dropped off and picked up at the venue where possible. Declarations are now open and will close at 7 pm tonight. Last week, the participants of the Women in Coaching Pathway took part in a co-coaching session with Rowing Ireland’s high-performance coaches at the National Rowing Centre.
