For Anyone Asking, “How long, O Lord?”

Do you ever get that heavy feeling that nothing will ever change? Or that life will never get any better; this is as good as it gets? I think of how David must have felt like that, when he wrote the words in Psalm 13:1, “How long, O Lord?” Maybe you’re in the middle of your own “How long.” How long, O Lord, until the grief subsides?  How long, O Lord, until I have financial independence? How long, O Lord, until you answer my prayer? How long, O Lord, until I move ahead? How long, O Lord, until I see a miracle in my marriage?  It’s impossible to say how close a breakthrough is for you ..read more

Where is the “Good” in Good Friday?
Jennifer Dukes Lee | Christian Female Blogger

I was well into my thirties the first time I cried over the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Throughout my life, I had listened to hundreds of sermons about Christ’s death. I had read about it extensively, had even understood that His sacrifice happened not only for the world in general, but for me personally. Yet it wasn’t until noon on a Good Friday that I wept over it. The breakdown happened at a very small service in the dimly lit sanctuary of our country church. Fewer than a dozen people were in the room. We sat in chairs circling a large wooden cross, which was laying on the floor. Nails and ..read more

I Love.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you have permission to love exactly what you love — in all your quirky, regular, ordinary, weird, wild ways. An exhiliarating boat ride to see the whales in Maui! I love being a mom of girls. I love fast boat rides that make me giggle and shriek like a child. I love having such a fun time that I forget where I put my phone. I love how a palm tree looks like a woman with wild, wind-blown hair. I love how the ocean is powerful enough to pull you in, but tranquil enough to calm you down. I love a huge pile of shoes by the back door. I love the high-pitched ..read more

As the World Returns to “Normal,” Let’s Skip This Part of Normal

This past Sunday, my church was the fullest it has been in over a year. Yesterday, I booked a vacation. And just a few minutes ago, my phone dinged with a text from a friend inviting us to dinner. It’s happening: Life is beginning to feel almost … normal. The world is starting to open. And for the most part, I am embracing it. I can visit my vaccinated parents without fear of infecting them. I don’t obsessively Google statistics of new COVID cases anymore. I long ago stopped washing my groceries (tell me I’m not the only one who did this for a while.) I’ve been waiting for this moment for ..read more

God is With You in the Little Things

Years ago, I was elbow deep in warm sudsy water. My hands searched along the bottom to hunt down the baby spoon—an ordinary task, one among many that day along with folding laundry, taking out the trash, and finding a way to control a LEGO city that was experiencing urban sprawl in our living room. It could have been a completely forgettable moment—that fishing for a spoon—except that earlier in the day, I had read a slim book written centuries earlier by a monk named Lawrence. His words awakened something in me. Brother Lawrence seemed to suggest that there was no task too small for ..read more

If You Feel Like You’re Messing Up Your Kids

The hardest and best job I’ve ever had is being a mom. Before the girls were young, I devoured a book called What to Expect When You’re Expecting. It prepared me for prenatal screenings, and it gave me good advice on proper nutrition and preparing a nursery. But I had no idea what to expect when it came to wonky sleep schedules for babies or postpartum depression. As the girls got older, raising children became even more complex. When should they be allowed to have a phone? When is dating ok? How do I deal with my child’s anxiety? How can I protect my child from bullies? I had no clue how hard ..read more

Come to my Kitchen Table for a Chat

It feels like forever since I blogged in the good old-fashioned “blog way,” right here at JenniferDukesLee.com. I share daily snippets of life, my struggles, and (I hope) helpful encouragement over on my Facebook page and Instagram. But I’ve not committed to the longer-form blog post in quite a while. My intention here today isn’t to craft a beautiful story or anything like that. Right now, I feel like it’s just going to be a conversation. It’s you and me, and I imagine us sitting at my kitchen table together this morning, warm coffee cups in our hands, sprinkling rain outside the window, phea ..read more

About Those Seeds You are Planting in Your Children …

I am going to tell you a short story about my girls, but please know this: the last thing I want to do is hold myself as a model mom with perfect kids. If you’ve been around here for more than a hot second, you know that’s not true. But I decided to post this as an encouragement to you. Because so many of you are young moms (or know young moms) in the trenches. More than anything, Christian moms want their kids to grow up with a sense of their identity in Christ. They want them to cling to Jesus in hard times, and learn the value of prayer and study. If you’re like me, as a young mom yo ..read more

The Real Problem with Saying “Merry Christmas”
Jennifer Dukes Lee | Christian Female Blogger

It’s that time of year, when a little ruckus rises up over whether we ought to tell one another “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas.” We noticed whether our friends’ greeting cards were imprinted with secular or sacred greetings, and we pay attention to which greeting the store clerks use. The other day, a woman at the grocery store wished me “Happy Holidays.” A part of me longed for her to tell me, “Merry Christmas.” But then I felt a check in my spirit. There’s actually a glaring problem with saying those two words, “Merry Christmas.” The real problem with saying “Merry Christma ..read more

A Very Mary Christmas
Jennifer Dukes Lee | Christian Female Blogger

Feet dangling in patent-leather, I sat on the polished pew while the Christmas pageant director assigned parts. I held my breath, waiting as she called names. I dreaded this moment, for I knew I’d be instructed to serve as a sheep or cow. Each year, the director would assure us that those lowing, humble barn-dwellers were “important” pieces of the story. I didn’t buy it. I wanted to be Mary. As I grew older, I was upgraded from beast to human. In this more esteemed role, I had the opportunity to deliver real lines, beyond the scripted moo-ing. We didn’t have enough boys in church to ..read more
