AWS is using its public cloud infrastructure as a globe-spanning threat detection tool to protect customers from trillions of malicious attempts to access its resources each year. The cloud giant revealed the existence of the detector at its security-focused event, AWS re:Inforce, last week. It has been using it for some years, and between May 2023 and April 2024 it blocked over 24 billion attempts to scan customer data stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and nearly 2.6 trillion attempts to discover vulnerable services running on customers’ virtual servers in Amazon Elastic Co ..read more

An inquiry into HPE’s $14 billion takeover of Juniper Networks by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), a move that potentially could delay approval of the deal, will have little impact on data center managers, an analyst with Info-Tech Research Group said. “HPE and Juniper have different but complementary product lines in the data center,” said John Annand, Info-Tech’s research director for infrastructure and operations. “Would it be nice for a DC manager to only have to deal with a single vendor for their servers, storage, and DC networking for the planned refresh in Q1 of ..read more

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has introduced a portfolio of AI products and services jointly developed with Nvidia that it hopes will help enterprises realize the productivity benefits of generative AI easily and quickly — ideally by using its products on-premises or in hybrid clouds. “Generative AI has tremendous potential for transforming businesses,” said HPE CEO Antonio Neri in a speech at HPE’s Discover event in Las Vegas, “but the complexity of fragmented AI technology poses too many risks and obstacles that can make it difficult for organizations to adopt at scale and put an organization ..read more

SUSE is preparing an “enterprise-grade generative AI Platform” that will run any vendor’s large language models (LLMs) on premises or in the cloud, it said Tuesday. But analysts said it is the on-prem scenario where SUSE could make a big difference, given the virtual absence of major vendors positioning for on-prem. Bill Weinberg, senior partner at consulting firm OpenSourceSense, said the dearth of on-prem AI suites is noteworthy.  “I haven’t seen a lot of integrated AI offerings even talking about on-prem. There was an announcement last year by IBM and VMware regarding support for Wats ..read more

Let’s face it, our jobs as CISOs are a constant dance with the shadows. We fight invisible enemies, anticipate the next attack, and strive to stay one step ahead of ever-evolving threats. That’s where threat intelligence comes in – it’s the intel that fuels our defenses, and the night-vision goggles to see the dark and precarious battlefield clearly (or at the least a little better). Why should I care? The power of proactive security Gone are the days of reactive-only security. Patching vulnerabilities after a breach is like locking the barn door after the horses have bolted. In a world full of emerging cyber threats, ransomware—one of the earliest documented forms of cyberattacks—continues to pose a serious threat to organizations of all sizes. Even with cyber spending at an all-time high—to the tune of $219 billion globally—ransomware attacks continue to occur. But why? The reason is that cyberattacks are getting more sophisticated and firewalls and VPNs were built for a time when most people were working within the confines of an office. Today, with the cloud, mobility, and the rise of hybrid work, an organization’s attack surface has exponentially expanded. In ..read more
