Cisco is tying together the intelligence of AI with the power of the cloud to deliver a system it says will proactively protect distributed applications, devices and data located across public and private data centers and clouds. The new architecture, called Hypershield, is comprised of AI-based software, virtual machines, and other technology that will ultimately be baked into core networking components, such as switches, routers or servers. It promises to let organizations autonomously segment their networks when threats are a problem, gain rapid exploit protection without having to patch ..read more

Shredding files on Linux with the shred command
Network World » Cloud computing

The most obvious way to remove a file on a Linux system is to simply use the rm (remove) command. However, even though you will no longer see the file once it’s been deleted, this doesn’t mean that the file’s contents have been so thoroughly wiped from the disk that they can’t be recovered. Content will often sit on the disk until the space is used by a new file. Another option – one that overwrites the file and optionally deletes it too – is called “shred”. As the name implies, the shred command will repeatedly change and rearrange the file’s data so that it can’t be recovered. It will also ..read more

From Sydney to Seoul to New Delhi, a new type of cloud is casting a long shadow over technology strategies. Sovereign clouds, designed to keep a nation’s data firmly within its borders, are upending traditional approaches to cloud computing for global enterprises operating in the Asia-Pacific (APAC). Although it’s still in the early days, IDC’s survey shows that 19% of APEJ (Asia Pacific except Japan) organizations expect to increase their spending on sovereign cloud this year. According to Capgemini’s research, in Australia alone, 64% of organizations are actively investigating a sovereign ..read more

Many adults today remember a time before smartphones were the hub of daily life. However, millions of young people worldwide do not. Today, we’re at a similar inflection point, only this time it’s the convergence of two technologies: 5G and AI. Enabling AI-powered solutions to cost-effectively perform real-time tasks everywhere will fundamentally change how we live, work, and play in ways that were futuristic dreams not long ago. This is being made possible by higher-performance, lower-latency 5G and private 5G (P5G) networks, as AI applications are vastly more compute- and network-intensive ..read more

DIY or commercial network automation? Most network teams choose ‘all of the above’

The first question most IT organizations ask when they kick off network automation projects is: Do we build or buy? In reality, most network teams end up doing both. “We have a hybrid strategy,” an IT tools architect at a Fortune 500 media company recently told Enterprise Management Associates (EMA). “We can buy some commercial tools where it makes sense. But we are also developing tools internally where we can’t get the capabilities we need from vendors. Commercial tools can meet about 80% of our needs.” Network teams often perceive a binary choice with network automation. Some lean toward ..read more
