Contemplating the Approach to Creating Policies and Procedures in the Church   I remember reading Deep and Wide: Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend a while back. it was a great read! I loved how Andy Stanley addressed the need; when developing policies, processes, and procedures; to think in terms of guidelines, rather than strict, black and white decisions when dealing with people issues with staff and the church at large. In chapter 4, Just As I Ain't. Andy Stanley describes the challenge of dealing with the tension between grace and truth. He goes so far as to ..read more

Organizational Culture

What is "Culture" and Why is it Important?   The success or failure of an enterprise is almost entirely dictated by how well the organization's senior leadership creates a healthy culture. I know that that’s a bold statement, but it's painfully true. Culture happens when the senior leader(s) in the organization does or doesn’t practice good leadership. Let me say this differently. If the leader(s) is good (i.e., really "gets it" when it comes to leadership and what motivates and encourages people), the result will be a healthy culture. If not, the result will be an unhealthy culture. It’s ..read more

John D. Gillespie on a Robust Jesus-Following Life

"Never forget, that in the end, you will be as holy and as happy as you want to be. God is not short on the supply of grace. His promises are sure and His willingness to work in you to your good and His glory is not in question. Laziness will be rewarded with little joy and little transformation. Diligence will be rewarded with much joy and much transformation."  John D. Gillespie ..read more

Writing Job Descriptions

How to Write a Job Description Step by Step   One of the things I’m frequently asked about is how to write a good job description. Over the years, I've shared copies of many of the job descriptions written at the church I served. Today, I thought I would share my “two cents” on how to write one. Obviously, there are several different approaches to writing a job description. I've seen many over the years as an Executive Pastor, and now as a coach. In the church, job descriptions tend to contain information that I don’t believe should be in a job description. For ex ..read more

Developing a "Plan and Execute" Culture

One of the Most Important Responsibilities of the Senior Church Leader   A critical part of any organizational culture is instilling the norm that we "plan and execute." It's not "ready, fire, aim." It's "aim, ready, fire!" But why is planning so important to the success of the church? I'll borrow a quote from a previous post I wrote on strategic planning to answer this question. Why plan? Why is planning or “choosing a direction” so important? Especially in the church, it’s important to make every action count. You’ve got to choose a direction and determine how you’re going to ..read more

Identifying First-Time Guests

Exploring This Very Important Part of a Good Church Growth Strategy Those who measure the number of first-time guests we attract each weekend know one crucial thing. We're only counting a portion of the "actual" number of first-time guests. In other words, many first-time guests do not identify themselves. Therefore, we don't know they are there. The "front of the house person," regardless of title and other responsibilities, is responsible for "connections" at most churches. They are constantly rethinking how to collect first-time guest data and how to follow up with people. This is a BIG de ..read more

Scott Cormode on Helping Congregants See Their World Through God's Eyes

"I want to argue for a different way to understand Christian leadership, one that says that the purpose of Christian leadership is to make spiritual meaning. Just as the prophets showed the Hebrews where God was at work in their world, so a Christian leader should help God's people see how to interpret their daily lives from God's perspective." Scott Cormode ..read more
