A Power Unbound RECOMMENDED: A Power Unbound by Freya Marske is $2.99! This is book 3 of The Last Binding series, a queer historical fantasy series that began with A Marvellous Light (which is in KU so if you haven’t read this trilogy, it’s easy to start). A Power Unbound was mentioned in Hide Your Wallet, and Freya Marske was a guest on the podcast to talk about the second book A Restless Truth. This trilogy is terrific, and A Power Unbound has a 4.39 star average on StoryGraph and 4.32 on Goodreads. Have you read this book? A Power Unbound is the final entry in Frey ..read more

Welcome back to Get Rec’d! This one has more romance than I typically include because we already recommend so many romances on the site! Of course, romance is also what we’re here for. Hey y’all! I’m driving the Whatcha Reading? bus this week, as Amanda is traveling the globe. Spring has SPROINGED around me. This is a picture I took recently of my neighbor’s camellia (I think that’s a camellia) against the sky. In a truly dorky move, I’m trying to match the colors for a quilt in progress because I love blue, green, and pink together. Here’s what’s on the currently-reading list at SBTB HQ – with a mild TW for some discussion of depression. Elyse: It’s FINALLY spring here so I assume it’s my brain telling me to get outside. I downloaded the audio of Ghost Station by SA Ba ..read more

A | BN | K What happens when you write the books you want to read but are having a hard time finding? Many good things. Kimberly Lemming loves fantasy, and started writing her own catnip, which led to the joy that is the Mead Mishaps series. We answer ALL the tough questions, like how many mead mishaps have we personally experienced? How does one make the bananas spin? And why is Galavant the greatest production ever made? Note: in the middle of the episode, the email Kimberly sent that gave me a peek at the cover for That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Human, which was in the final stages of d ..read more

Embroidering Her Truth Embroidering Her Truth: Mary, Queen of Scots and the Language of Power by Clare Hunter is .99c! This book jumped out at me because it’s an examination of how Mary, Queen of Scots used textiles, embroidery, and color to communicate and convey power. This book has a 4.13 star average on StoryGraph, and a 4.26 star average on Goodreads. It also won an award as Scottish History Book of the Year in 2022! Have you read this book? I felt that Mary was there, pulling at my sleeve, willing me to appreciate the artistry, wanting me to understand the dazzle of the material world t ..read more

B+ Warrior Girl Unearthed by Angeline Boulley March 2, 2023 · Henry Holt and Co. Literary FictionMystery/ThrillerYoung Adult Warrior Girl Unearthed is thrilling, upsetting, and edifying. There are some structural problems with this book, it still delivered the squee factor, in that I was totally absorbed and emotionally invested in this story. This is a stand-alone novel set in the same community as in the book The Firekeeper’s Daughter, another excellent read. Both books tackle difficult issues that face indigenous young women in America with empathy, perception, tenderness, and grit. Neith ..read more

Hey ho! Let’s go! Though I scheduled this post a couple weeks ago, I’m an officially in South Korea by the time you’re reading this. I’m sure I’m having a great time. We plan to do an overnight stay at a Buddhist temple and I’m most definitely going to load up on Korean beauty and skincare products. There’s also a chance some areas will still have cherry blossoms. Karaoke and ungodly amounts of Korean BBQ are on the agenda! … To all my fellow board gamers! There’s a game hitting Kickstarter in May that might be of interest to you: ApotheBakery. It looks very cute and I signed up to be notified ..read more

The Kiss Quotient RECOMMENDED: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang is $1.99! We had a wonderful guest squee of this and it was Amanda’s favorite read of 2018: I truly loved this book. Loved. It made me feel like a champagne bubble – all fizzy and light. When I think of all the magical feelings romance gives its readers, I will forever think of this book. Amanda says she’s “jealous of those who get to read this for the first time,” which is pretty massive praise. If you’ve read this one, at $1.99, maybe you can gift it to a friend! A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that pro ..read more
