Bench competition tightens as Spring Training comes to a close
The San Diego Padres are in the final stages of Spring Training and that means tough decisions await Manager Mike Shildt and his staff. Shildt said recently this is the most competitive camp he’s had with regard to position players.
Padres manager Mike Shildt: “This is the most competitive position player camp I’ve ever had at the end of a camp.”

Dylan Cease dominant in final spring outing
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Juan Nunez induced a bases loaded ground ball to shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who flipped to second baseman Jake Cronenworth. Cronenworth then threw to Luis Arraez at first base to complete a difficult double play to end the top of the seventh inning, keeping the game tied, 0-0.

The options could be a factor in who makes it and who doesn’t
The Padres roster crunch is coming. There are so many guys fighting for a very limited amount of spots so things like options will likely come into play in those final debates at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Below is part of MLB.com’s description of how Minor League options work:
“Players on a 40-man roster are given three Minor League “options.” An option allows that player to be sent to the Minor Leagues (“optioned”) without first being subjected to waivers. Players who are optioned to the Minors are ..read more

Who will be breaking out this season?
At Padres FanFest on February 1, General Manager A.J. Preller participated in a leadership Q&A with Mike Shildt and Erik Greupner. During the discussion, he acknowledged the team would need a “couple” of surprises for the 2025 season to round out the roster.
Hampered by some big contracts and a limited payroll, Preller made some minor league and budget major league signings as the spring season got underway. For the team to continue to excel as they did in 2024, the roster will need bounce-back years from the superstars ..read more

Darvish is 38 with over 1,700 innings on his arm
When the Padres gave Yu Darvish a 6-year, $108 million extension that would take him through his age 41 season, they had to know this was coming. It’s not Tommy John yet but what they know is coming is an IL stint to start the season due to elbow inflammation.
Yu Darvish is expected to open the season on the injured list. Kyle Hart, Stephen Kolek and Randy Vásquez are competing for two Opening Day rotation spots. One of those three will start the season in Triple-A El Paso's rotation.
