Reacting to the great piece out from Kevin Acee and Annie Heilbrunn this morning
Credit to the San Diego Union Tribune’s Kevin Acee and Annie Heilbrunn for their great piece this morning on Fernando Tatis Jr.’s offseason. He’s been working out with Joe Musgrove and other Padres teammates in the pool to get ready for all of the challenges he will face during the 2023 season. Tatis says his shoulder is fully healed and his wrist is 90%. A lot of information to react to in this episode of Talking Friars!

There will be plenty of bobbleheads given away at Petco Park this coming season
The San Diego Padres will be capping season tickets at the conclusion of FanFest next weekend for the first time in franchise history so there’s already plenty of interest among fans to attend games in 2023. Plus, the chances of a Ha-Seong Kim trade appear to be slimmer
Bob Nightengale came out with a report earlier this month that the San Diego Padres plan to be “all in” on Shohei Ohtani next offseason but he was the only one to report that at the time. But another writer—Dennis Lin, who knows the Padres better than Nightengale—reported yesterday that the Padres will definitely be in on the Los Angeles Angels superstar.
Thus, it definitely seems like Ohtani is going to be discussed inside the Padres front offices. But what level of interest will San D ..read more

The Athletic’s Dennis Lin reported today San Diego wants to ease their starters into the season
The San Diego Padres currently have Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell, Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo as the five starting pitchers in their rotation. Could there be a sixth added for the start of the regular season?
According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, San Diego “would like to use a six-man rotation and ease their starters into the season.”

Martinez was going to be a reliever for Mark DeRosa’s squad
The San Diego Padres probably just took a big exhale because one of their starting pitchers, Nick Martinez, has decided to sit out the 2023 World Baseball Classic after previously committing to be a reliever for Team USA.
Nick Martinez has opted out of pitching in the WBC. Martinez, who pitched in the Olympics, described it as a tough decision but felt it would be unfair to his teammates if he risks opening the season not fully built up as a starter. Team USA had him on the roster as a reliever ..read more
