It would be a shame if we spluttered out in these final three home games, but it’s possible. Bournemouth and Palace have been on an upward swing and Luton will be dying for the cause on Saturday, so while our attack remains hodgepodge at best, the prospect of a victory in any of these fixtures feels like a Herculean task. Best of a bad situation on Saturday At a minimum, we need the same endeavour we saw against Arsenal. It’s probably not so easy to get the players going for non-title-chasing opposition, but that’s what Gary has to do. And while it’s understandable we’re not scoring many goals ..read more

Could have been worse I suppose. With Gary barely able to field a senior XI it’s commendable that things remained competitive right to the death. Flash point – we nearly stole the lead Arsenal went strong with their own team selection and probed from the off without finding that killer final action to settle the nerves. Had João Gomes managed to edge us ahead with the shot David Reya pushed against the post things would have been very interesting, but it was another Brazilian, Gabriel Jesus, who made the difference, wrestling with Matt Doherty to tee up Trossard to shank home. You couldn’t beg ..read more

With a full week to rest up and prepare for this one, I’m expecting a performance. You can never dismiss the idea that a top side will just turn up and take you to the cleaners but I’ll be annoyed if that’s the case this time. Not great but not awful last weekend Arsenal have had a rough week and expended plenty of energy, which is to our advantage if Gary can extract the right response from the group. The longer we stay in the game, the more uncomfortable it’s going to become for them so I hope Wolves come out ready to go the distance. Arsenal Villa did a number on the Gunners last week. It w ..read more

As some or all of you will know, a group of bloggers meet up annually after the final home game of the season for a meal, a few drinks and a generally good time. This year, it’s taking place at Rosso E Nero (25 Darlington Street, Wolverhampton WV1 4HW) on Saturday 11th May (6.30pm meet for a 7.00pm start) following the Crystal Palace game. Whether you’re a regular attendee or considering joining up for the first time, a friendly group will make you feel welcome, so I encourage anyone who can come along. If you’d like to attend, can you either comment below or reach out directly to Mike (oldfi ..read more

For someone who apparently doesn’t relish playing as a number 9, Matheus Cunha is rather good. What a goal – 11 in the Premier League for Cunha this season He channeled R9 with that first goal today, carrying the ball half the length of the pitch, slaloming between tackles and firing into the top corner. His second wasn’t nearly so attractive, but just as effective, forcing the ball home in a packed penalty area to earn his side a share of the spoils. Was a draw the fairest outcome? Possibly. Forest definitely had more territory and spent a lot of the game probing for that opening, but ultimat ..read more

I didn’t like that second half against West Ham. They stepped onto us, condensed the game and there was no Plan B forthcoming. Look at the officials but also look at yourselves It’s laudable to keep building up from the back, but after you’ve tried a dozen times and are persistently getting yourself into trouble, you have to mix it up. Matheus Cunha gave the ball away several times in our defensive third of the pitch, culminating in the penalty that got West Ham level. That’s our one and only striker, dropping back to the edge of his own 18-yard box to join in the play, when we’re winning the ..read more

Tony Harrington, hang your head in shame.  Only one of these three interfered What a howler.  I’m not against VAR, but the Premier League’s iteration of it is atrocious.  Technology should be used to correct clear and obvious errors, not laughably marginal offside calls.  I do wonder whether these sort of incidents happening each and every week will eventually lead to people falling out of love with the game.  That aside, the players should shoulder their fair share of the blame for this defeat. What was that second half showing all about? We were great in the first 45 ..read more

On the whole, I’ve been impressed with our home form this season. Solid in front of our fans this season We’ve generally turned up in matches or at least hung in there and pushed teams right to the end when the performances haven’t been up to scratch. That’s a sign of a good team. Five of our eight remaining fixtures are at Molineux and I suspect they represent our best chance of picking up points. This will be a tough one but we’re capable of getting a result. West Ham I’ll be keeping one eye on what happens at West Ham in the summer, partially fretting about the domino effect. As a cantankerous old manager who divided opinion like no other once said: “Opinions are like arseholes.” Waving his wand – Gary “We’ve all got one, but it’s not always wise to air it in public,” said Mick (or something to that effect). There was no grey area around McCarthy back in the day, whose no-nonsense approach induced love and hate in equal measure – and very little in between. Our modern-day Merlin is concocting miracles not seen at Molineux since the gruff Yorkshireman walked through the door with nine or 10 players to choose from. While their approaches to the Beautiful Game couldn ..read more

Could have won. Could have lost. You can say that about a lot of games in the Premier League but it feels a particularly fitting summation of this one. Rayan to the rescue Burnley started sharply and asked most of the questions but Wolves had played their way into it nicely by the time the home side took the lead. It was a great finish for them but poor from our perspective with Nelson getting caught under the ball to open up the space at the back post. Gary deployed some sort of experimental setup with Semedo playing as an outside centre half and at that point you were thinking it had backfir ..read more
