Be careful how you’re shooting! The Phoblographer realizes that, as a publication, we don’t always have to be so serious. So, each weekend, we work to bring you a bit of fun in our Humor section. Inspired by some of the classic political cartoons of other publications, we’re tapping into some of the things that ..read more

Our Members Will Enjoy a Brand New Experience
The Phoblographer Blog

This month, the Phoblographer shut down our app and will continue running through the website. We made this decision after a lot of careful thought. I’ll personally admit that the interface and design are beautiful, and we’re going to begin work on an interface that makes our mobile website even better and nicer to look ..read more

Barbara Peacock Documents Americans in Their Bedrooms (NSFW)
The Phoblographer Blog
by Nilofer Khan

'The American Dream' has been declared the quintessential way of life around the world. Coined by author and historian James Truslow Adams in 1931, during the Great Depression, it is succinctly described as: "Dream of a better, richer and happier life for all our citizens of every rank." When words grow, like humans, they evolve with time, developing new meanings and contexts. The American Dream, once equality and freedom, is now primarily a consequence of consumerism and capitalism. It can be achieved by those with the financial and social means to pursue it. In contrast to the looming b ..read more

In Defense of Pixel Peeping and Why We Need to Rethink It
The Phoblographer Blog
by Chris Gampat
23h ago
For several years, the Phoblographer hasn't believed in pixel-peeping images. And to be very honest with you, I still don't. I think looking at details at 100% is pretty asinine and throws out the idea of how a photograph can be art. Instead, pixel peeping lends itself to all the technical details that completely disregard the human aspect of photography. But it still has a bit of importance. In fact, I'd say that it needs a fundamental rebrand of what it is -- and I've come to this conclusion after a decade and a half of testing cameras and publishing lots of photos ..read more

This is Better Than Your Camera’s Warranty
The Phoblographer Blog
by Chris Gampat

Our photography insurance plan will protect you when your camera's warranty won't! We're giving you more than the competition can in different ways! Here's a little-known fact: the warranty of your camera or lens doesn't necessarily cover what happens to it in case of dust, inclement weather, etc. That's why we created the Photography Care Program, in collaboration with Full Frame Insurance. Dust affects your camera and lens performance more than you think, and unless you're constantly cleaning the lens contacts, your autofocus performance could end up pretty wonky. But just in case somet ..read more

MPIX Now Lets You Print Your Photos Onto Birch Blocks
The Phoblographer Blog
by Chris Gampat

In truth, the brand new MPIX Birch Photo Blocks seem to be little more than acrylic prints made onto birch blocks. Then, the photos simply just stand up on their own using a stand. The Birch Photo Blocks are all around 1 inch thick and don't seem to be standard plywood that you'd get at Home Depot. As it is, I could never find specifically Birch plywood there. They appear to be a refined product designed to be put onto your tabletop and not necessarily a wall. Best of all, they're also pretty affordable with the most expensive option only costing you around $23 or so ..read more

The Hobolite Mini Max Is the Light You’ve Probably Wanted
The Phoblographer Blog

It’s no secret that we’re not the biggest fans of LED lights. Often, we’ve found them all to not have very much in the way of innovation for photographers. Traditionally, Rotolight has been the most innovative — but we cannot support them due to their unethical work with a specific photographer. And today, that’s changing ..read more

Introducing: The Best Capture One Presets for Photographers
The Phoblographer Blog
by Feroz Khan
3d ago
Earlier this year, we introduced a set of post-processing presets for Adobe Lightroom. Saying that these have been successful in downloads would be an understatement. In the last three months, we've loved seeing the work you've created using these presets. Understandably, some of you have requested that the same set of presets be made available for Capture One. We're pleased to say that these are finally available for you now ..read more

Panasonic Leica 9mm f1.7 Review: Tiny, Fast, and Fun
The Phoblographer Blog
by Hillary Grigonis

The crop factor on Micro Four Thirds comes in handy with telephoto lenses — but the opposite is true when it comes to capturing ultra-wide views. Finding an ultra-wide, bright aperture MFT lens that isn’t aspherical is a challenge. The Panasonic Leica 9mm f1.7 ASPH DG Summilux is one such lens. Equivalent to an 18mm lens, the lens captures an ultra-wide view without encroaching on fisheye territory. What’s even more impressive is that the Panasonic Leica 9mm does it all in a tiny body and for under $500 ..read more

Almost 15 Years On, Is 500px A Site Worth Investing Time In?
The Phoblographer Blog
by Feroz Khan
4d ago
I wasn't the most active photographer on 500px when I set up an account a decade ago, but I will admit this - it was one of the best sites back then to get inspired by. In a world of photography untouched by AI images and spam bots, 500px was overflowing with an abundance of creativity and talent. Getting to the top of the For You page, even if for a few hours, was considered amazing. And if your image made it to the Editor's Choice selections back then, you were considered legendary in your circles. But then came a time when the algorithm that could get you to the top became easy to play abou ..read more
