The JFP has served Jackson, Mississippi, and surrounding areas for nearly two decades, covering Mississippi’s capital city and suburbs through print and digital media. (AP) — A former Mississippi Department of Human Services director has been indicted on 20 additional felony charges tied to allegations that he participated in misusing money that was supposed to help some of the poorest people in the nation, including some spent to send a former pro wrestler to a luxury drug rehab facility. (AP) — A mother and son who ran a for-profit education company have pleaded guilty to improperly obtaining millions of dollars from the Mississippi Department of Education by submitting false documents about schools they operated. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — An assistant chief says the police department in Mississippi's largest city is short-staffed, and recruitment and retention are big challenges. Joseph Wade of Jackson Police Department discussed staffing levels Monday during the Jackson City Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting, WLBT-TV reported. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A federal judge has ordered Hinds County leaders to implement several changes at the Raymond Detention Center. The ruling this week comes nearly a month after U.S. District Court Judge Carlton Reeves said the jail will remain in civil contempt for the second time, WJTV-TV reported. (AP) — The Mississippi Department of Archives and History is allowing the public to have access to additional papers from the late author Eudora Welty, including letters written by members of her family. The release came Wednesday on the 113th anniversary of Welty's birth. She died July 23, 2001. According to her will, the family correspondence was to remain private for 20 years after her death.
