Am I crazy or does this SSD have no controller?

Pulled this out of a workstation today. No DRAM Cache. No surprise. But where the heck is the controller? Is it in the NAND? Just curious... I also wanna know how on earth people are allowed to manufacture DRAM Cacheless SSDs without getting a lawsuit thrown at them. They literally work long enough till your warranty/return period is up, then they get insanely slow... Not malicious at all ..read more

Assistance Required - Hard Disk Password ( ATA Password) not accepting

Hi Spicehead, Good Day! I'm facing a problem with Western Digital SSDs on my Lenovo laptops. I set an HDD password in the BIOS, but after four months of inactivity, it's no longer recognized on two laptops out of 300. These laptops are used for business, and the password is the same across all SSDs. I'd really appreciate your help with recovery/reset instructions or steps to resolve this issue. I'm not sure where to start. I have tried contacting WD support team and their reply is : "there is no workaround for this and we have not tested any of our SSDs with this feature. Make sure the firmwa ..read more

SSD drive showing as SCSI and uninitialized

I have 2 identical 480 GB SATA SSD drives. In device manager one is showing normal and the second is showing as a "SABRENT-SCSI Disk Drive" In Disk Manager it shows as uninitialized. In Diskpart it shows in the Disk list as size 0 with 0 free space. But if you select the disk and list the volume it shows correctly. I would like to get access to the drive and maybe be able to see what is on it. If it takes shipping it off to recover it, it is not worth it. I guess I am looking for some kind of quick fix or if it is bad and I just need to toss it. Thanks ..read more

Confirmation of port/interface

Hey everyone, Just need some confirmation I've got this interface identified correctly. So I have a client that brought me a Macbook Air (13" Early 2015, i5, 8GB) that has a dead motherboard. I thought my SSD to USB adapter would work but of course its just different enough and SSD interfaces standards have changed enough since 2015 that my search results are getting muddled. So this has a Samsung MZ-JPV128S/0A2 which I'm leaning towards having an mSATA interface, but I just want to make sure that I'm right before getting a USB adapter for them. Took the pics below of both sides, the full side ..read more

Any recommendations to destroy data on old ssd's / NVMe drives from old PC's going out of service?  The drives will not be reused.  My assumption would be to locate a suitable enclosure with USB-C connection.  Thoughts ..read more

Clone and Conversion of HDD to SSD

Scenario: TL:DR Version: **I want to take an old drive from older computer, clone it without data loss. Convert it to UEFI for new computers to read it, install it in the new computer. Then boom, done. No data migration needed, reinstall of software, settings, and everything is like nothing ever happened, except for new physical computer.** Legacy (MBR) boot drive on HDD. Drive is cloned using a Tripp-Lite device over to a SSD. I want to place this SSD into new computer, but new computers do not allow legacy drives. So, I need to convert it over from MBR to GPT for UEFI to work. If I take th ..read more

Any "universal" M.2-style multi interface external "toasters?"

I am finding myself working with M.2 style storage drives more and more. Sometimes they are the double split type and sometime they're the single split NVMe style. Sometimes it seems that neither style of adapter work - which I haven't yet reliably figured out as of yet why. I was thinking it would sure be nice if there's some kind of an external adapter similar to SATA "toaster" devices that allow multiple drives to be attached simultaneously AND could allow various adapter types to work. I've seen a couple M.2 style devices that seem to work for BOTH primary M.2 types I've encountered, but t ..read more
