In a culture inspired by the belief that both the animate as well as the inanimate possess power, dolls in Japan are more than mere toys or objects of beauty. Consequently, it's not strange at all that in Japan, dolls are believed to have a soul, even more so when we consider that the word "ningyō" translates to "having human form". A veteran of the doll making profession, Tanaka learned her art after working with an expert who created doll heads for Hina, geisha, and Kabuki dolls employing the more tha ..read more

What We See Is What We Get

And what we see (as much as what we get) is based on our ability to question how we determine what is real. A doll is a real as its porcelain, resin, vinyl and hard plastic form, and as our powers of make-believe allow. But in some instances, the doll (and their creator) aim to take the experience to a different level and insist that we engage more deeply in the dynamic by asking us to question how we recognize (versus know) what is intrinsically human.  Anna Egorova's Alexander ball-jointed doll is one perfect example. Perhaps we look at him and react adversely (thank you, Sigmund F ..read more

2023 closed with the very discreet introduction of Argigi Doll via Instagram. Limited to an edition of 50 dressed dolls, "Stellar Hue" Argigi Doll, is a veritable dolly delicacy. Dressed in a gorgeously executed rendition of a Pierre Cardin suit from his 1966-67 Autumn/ Winter collection (thanks to Matthew Sky Doll for the reference), Argigi beguiles with her volitive blue-eyes as they peek through the oval opening of her futuristic casque. A jacket made of soft sueded fabric features semi-circular cut-out designs (in reality functional side pockets) that impart a very cool factor over a strea ..read more

Way back when Dolldom coined the motto "The future of fashion dolls is handmade", the genius behind Endangered Sissy was already collecting vintage fabrics, a collection that grew to become a mile-high stash and that one day, and much to the delight of dollectors the world over, became lusciously handmade garments for utterly lucky dolls. Endangered Sissy is the brand to go to for colorful swagger. Vivacious melding of late 60s and early 70s design aesthetics makes the Endangered Sissy garment a trip back to the time when fashion dared to innovate and break limitations. Grand gala, grand event It's an op To dress your best! Grand ball, grand fest It's much better By yourself! -Ludy Laminous The joys of make-believe, of the power of the child's creative imagination, unfettered by the impositions of the cortical (as in superficial) world, is beautifully captured in the previous poem by writer Ludy Laminous. For the child requires not an audience to create a reality of deep magnitude and intimate substance and, as such, the doll onto which the fantasy is bestowed, needs but a fabulous fashion to exist in that eternal instant of beauty.
