This is what it’s like to buy or demo an Apple Vision Pro in Canada

Canadians can now buy an Apple Vision Pro headset and all the accessories from the Apple Store. I went to the Apple Store this morning to see what the buying/demo experience was all about. From what I saw, I think most people should buy or at least pick up their headsets in a physical Apple Store if they can since you get to spend some extra time making sure you have the perfect fit. Apple also runs you through a demo experience, which can be helpful since this device is futuristic. At my local Apple Store at the Eaton Centre in Toronto, there are two long tables near the front/middle of the ..read more

Google is set to unveil its Pixel 9 series next month at an earlier-than-usual event. With the event drawing near, leaks are ramping up, and now possible European pricing for the new smartphones has leaked online. Dealabs (via Android Authority) reported the pricing for all four new Pixel phones in France, though the pricing should be applicable in other parts of the EU as well. I've included CAD conversions, but it's important to keep in mind that currency conversions won't always match up with actual pricing, though it can give us an idea of how much the phones could cost in Canada. Virgin adds $44/40GB plan, drops 20G option to $39 to match Fido, Koodo

Bell's Virgin Plus kicked off the recent round of price hikes at flanker brands, and now it's walking back some changes to fall in line with Koodo and Fido. When Virgin changed its prices on July 4th, it turned its $34/20GB plan into a $44/20GB plan. However, Fido and Koodo didn't follow suit with their respective plan changes, instead opting for $39/20GB and $44/40GB plans. A recent update to Virgin's website dropped the 20GB plan to $39 and added a new $44/40GB plan. Aside from the new prices and data buckets, the plans have the same features as Virgin's other 4G plans. That means data spe ..read more

Telus tells Ontario workers to move to Montreal after closing Barrie office

Telus is forcing its call centre employees back into the office for three days a week. However, one call centre in Barrie, ON, has been closed for good, leading to complications for 150 of Telus' Ontario-based support employees. This leaves those people with three options: they can relocate to Montreal, be laid off with a compensation package, or try to find other employment with Telus that will allow them to continue to work in the Barrie area. Since 2020, Telus support employees have been on a work-from-home model, and according to United Steelworkers Local 1944 president Michael Phillips ..read more

Starlink satellites on sale at Best Buy and from SpaceX

If you want to get Starlink internet, there are a few good deals right now. The best deal is to buy it from SpaceX on the Starlink website, but it depends on where you live. Select locations, and we don't know which ones, can get the dish for as low as $199. Everyone else needs to spend $499. At Best Buy, the dish is also on sale for $499. This actually restores the price we had for most of 2023. Starlink hiked the price of the satellites to $599 in January, so it's unclear how long the $499 price will remain, at least on the Starlink website. No matter where you buy the satellite from, the m ..read more

Bell bringing Tim Horton’s ad masquerading as theatre to Crave

After a five-day run in Toronto's Elgin Theatre, it seems like Canada is going to get to see Tim Horton's latest ad at home on August 12. I'm not sure why you'd want to, but this isn't Bell's first time pushing a weirdly long ad onto its streaming service. Those who remember the train wreck of 2019's Reese Cup ASMR experience know what I'm talking about. Those who don't can still find it on YouTube. While some reviews of The Last Timbit are positive, it just feels strange to me that a company that's no longer Canadian continues to base pretty much all of its advertising on being Canadian. A new data transfer tool makes it much simpler to switch between iPhone and Android or vice versa. This tool is backed by the Data Transfer Initiative and basically aligns Google's and Apple's main photo library apps behind the scenes, making it possible to move a full library from one app to another. You can still use the setup tools in both phone ecosystems to transfer photos, but this is for people who want to do it post-setup. Moving from Apple to Google Sign in with your Apple account on the company's privacy website.  Choose the option to 'Transfer a copy of your data' Select Goog ..read more

Like clockwork, Rogers has rolled out plan changes similar to what we've seen from other members of the Big Three, Bell and Telus. However, Rogers has taken a slightly different approach than the others, offering different pricing and data buckets depending on whether customers choose to finance a device or go the bring your own phone (BYOP) route. Here is a quick overview of the changes: $65/75GB BYOP | $75/100GB finance (previously $60/75GB) $80/150GB BYOP | $90/175GB finance (previously $80/200GB) $100/175GB BYOP | $110/200GB finance (previously $100/200GB) There are a few other things w ..read more

Costco raising membership prices after seven years

The increase will occur on September 1st and raise the price from $60 to $65 per year. If you want an Executive Membership, the new cost is $130. This is a $10 increase, but you do get the opportunity to score up to $1,250 with your two percent rewards bonus by the end of each year. Overall, this isn’t a huge increase and falls in line with the retailer's typical pattern of upping its fees every five years or so. The last time it changed membership rates was in 2017 and 2012 before that. It’s also worth noting that when Costco changed its price in 2017, it also only raised it by $5. Another i ..read more

Google launched 'Immersive View' for Maps at Google I/O 2023 and is finally expanding the feature to select Canadian cities. Immersive View offers a more detailed view of your route while navigating, but only in supported cities. Google said the feature would use computer vision and AI to merge Street View and aerial images to create Immersive View. The view even has a time slider that allows users to see air quality and weather conditions throughout the day. Now, Google says Immersive View is available in five Canadian cities: Montreal, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton. To use the feat ..read more
