Polysocial Realities & Virtualities
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction

Our students of MArch Design for Performance and Interaction at the Bartlett School of Architecture contributed to Ars Electronica 2021 Festival with an exhibition around the subject of contemporary PolySocial Realities. This video shows interviews with the students presenting work in progress. The term PolySocial Realities coined in 2011, has unfolded and accelerated over the past decade until it not only pervades daily life, but indeed is daily life. Initially conceived of as a model to illustrate multi-directional and multi-platform information and communication across scales of time and s ..read more

Support Structure_Part 1
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Farzad Farzadnia

Every installation needs a support structure. In this post, we will take a look at step one of making hive support structure which is servo orienting on pedals. Before modelling the support structure, there is a need of gathering data of servos locations so the script which will be written in the future, can make the support structure based on this data. In the written script, servo support structure (servo holder) which was designed before (See Here), is defined as a block in order to decrease the size of the 3D model file and then oriented on each hexagon. In other word, there is one block o ..read more

Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Ruairi Glynn

The heart of the Interactive Architecture Lab is its Masters in Design for Performance & Interaction (MArch). Based at The Bartlett School of Architecture, it explores what happens when we design not in three dimensions but four. The radical, interdisciplinary Master’s degree teaches students to understand and design performances and interactive experiences for audiences in physical and virtual spaces. Students interviewed at their graduate project fair Join us for our open day where we describe the course in detail, and our plans for the coming academic year. Meet Programme Director Dr R ..read more

Telepresenting Bodies in Cyberspace: The Visual Representation of Avatars
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Bojia You
4y ago
With the development of telepresence technology, people’s perception of body has entered a new age. Our cognition of “self” is no longer limited to the physical body in the real world. In online games and various social media, we create our own avatars in cyberspace, where the physical distance seems to be gradually disappearing. Avatar is not a simple duplication of the body, but an extension of mind. The physical body is reconstructed by data. However, once we are in the space behind the screen, what kind of shape should we be transformed into, and how should we perceive the world on the scr ..read more

Clustering | Fabrication File Preparation
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Farzad Farzadnia
4y ago
In this post, clustering and file preparation for laser cutter will be discussed. There will be another clustering section for support structure as well but the base is similar. Clustering Clustering is the process of categorising data into different lists. There are different methods of clustering such as: Machine learning (K-Mean and Gaussian mixture) and Row-Column. below is a chosen generation which is clustered. Each row is categorised in one different list and each list has a different colour. It is due to the order of each pedal and row for assembling. Clustered Hexagons 1 Additionally ..read more

BFF | Tessellation Tests
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Farzad Farzadnia

There is one more tessellation method which will be discussed in this post and then some generations will be tessellated using all the methods which have been discussed so far. Boundary First Flattening (BFF) “Boundary First Flattening (BFF) is a free and open source application for surface parameterization. Unlike other tools for UV mapping, BFF allows free-form editing of the flattened mesh, providing users direct control over the shape of the flattened domain—rather than being stuck with whatever the algorithm provides. The initial flattening is fully automatic, with distortion mathematical ..read more

Surface Generation_4D Noise
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Farzad Farzadnia

As part of the design process, I was supposed to create a free-form surface for my hive so I can tesselate it and create my pedals on it. I started generating set of spheres by changing the height and the scale of them by random numbers as you can see below. In this script, when a new random number generates, it changes mentioned factors and produces a new geometry. At the end, we can bake this geometry into rhino viewport and have a set of generations: Sphere Generations_01 Results were so simple and I thought we need more complex geometries. As part of the Web-GL class in semester one, we we ..read more

Some Thesis Ideas and Explorations
Interactive Architecture Lab | : Design for Performance and Interaction
by Marina Mersiadou
4y ago
Up until the end of term 2, we were focusing on the dominance of vision over the other senses and how this affects the current way of experiencing our everyday lives. Our proposal for term 2 was a performance, based in a Virtual Reality environment that included physical curated objects in space with sensors that participants would be able to touch. We tried to explore how this interaction would alter the experience of a virtual collage-space, a space in between private and public fragments (living rooms and public transport). Point Cloud Interaction Simulations – Hegemony of Vision At the end ..read more
